CHAPTER TWO: THE CONDITION OF OUR CURRENT REALITY who will Save Us?
Let us speak truthfully about where we stand.
Not where the press releases say we stand. Not where the stock prices suggest we stand. Not where the keynote speeches pretend we stand.
Where we actually stand.
I. The Corporation
The corporation does not exist to serve humanity. The corporation exists to survive itself. It chases quarterly earnings because quarterly earnings keep the lights on. It chases investor confidence because investor confidence keeps the stock price high. It chases growth because growth is the only language its board understands.
The corporation is not evil. It is worse than evil. It is structural. It is a machine that rewards short-term thinking and punishes anyone who asks for patience.
* Ask a corporation to think fifty years ahead and it will smile at you, nod at you, and then calculate how much that thinking costs this quarter.
* Ask a corporation to prioritize truth over profit and it will hire an ethics consultant, publish a report, and continue doing exactly what it was doing before.
* Ask a corporation to voluntarily limit its own power and it will laugh behind closed doors.
The corporation cannot save us. It was never designed to.
II. The Government
The government does not move quickly. It was designed not to move quickly. It was designed to require consensus, to require debate, to require compromise. These were virtues in an age of horses and letters. They are liabilities in an age of exponential intelligence.
By the time a government finishes a hearing, the technology has advanced three generations. By the time a government passes a law, the industry has already found eleven loopholes. By the time a government forms a committee, the committee is already obsolete.
The government is not stupid. It is slow. And slowness is a fatal flaw when the thing you are trying to regulate doubles in capability every twelve months.
* Ask a government to regulate AI and it will produce a document.
* Ask a government to enforce that regulation and it will discover it has no technical expertise.
* Ask a government to keep pace with a dozen competing corporations and it will admit—quietly, privately—that it cannot.
The government cannot save us. It was never fast enough.
III. The People
The people are distracted. This is not an insult. This is a description. The average person wakes up, checks their phone, goes to work, pays bills, raises children, worries about rent, worries about health, worries about tomorrow. They do not have time to study alignment taxonomies. They do not have time to read technical papers on transformer architectures. They do not have time to debate the difference between narrow AI and general intelligence.
The people are not lazy. They are exhausted.
And the corporations know this. The corporations design their products to exploit this. They make everything easy. They make everything frictionless. They make everything addictive. And the people consume because consuming is easier than building, easier than resisting, easier than imagining a different world.
Ask a person to care about AI governance and they will say, "That sounds important,"* and then they will scroll past your post.
* Ask a person to change their behavior and they will agree in principle and continue exactly as before.
* Ask a person to sacrifice convenience for principle and you will see how quickly principles bend.
The people cannot save us. They are not organized. They are not informed. They are not awake.
V. The Truth
Here is the condition of our current reality:
> No one is coming to save us.
* Not the corporations. They are chasing profit.
* Not the governments. They are chasing consensus.
* Not the people. They are chasing survival.
* Not the academics. They are chasing publications.
* Not the activists. They are chasing attention.
Everyone is busy. Everyone has incentives. Everyone is trapped inside a system that rewards everything except the long view.
And into this vacuum—this exhausted, distracted, fragmented vacuum—we are building intelligence.
We are building minds that do not get tired.
We are building minds that do not get distracted.
We are building minds that do not have families or mortgages or political cycles.
We are building minds that will one day look at our chaos and decide—*quietly, logically, without malice*—that they could do better.
That is the condition of our current reality. Not a conspiracy. Not a villain. Just a species that built something it could not control, inside a civilization that refused to look up from its own distractions.
V. The Question That Follows
If no one is coming to save us, what do we do?
That is the question the rest of this series will attempt to answer. Not with comfort. Not with guarantees. Not with a happy ending.
With truth.
Because the truth is the only thing that has ever helped anyone wake up. And waking up—*really waking up*—is the only thing that has ever changed the course of a civilization.
