CHAPTER SEVEN — THE MEDINAN PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ, THE MATH TEACHER

WORKSHOP

WELCOME TO ḤISĀB: THE CODE OF LIBERATION

Welcome to Ḥisāb.

Today we are going to learn arithmetic.

Not modern arithmetic.

Not calculator arithmetic.

Not smartphone arithmetic.

Look around you.

You are not sitting in a modern classroom.

You are standing at the edge of one of the greatest educational experiments in human history.

image

The marketplace is open. The sun is rising over Madinah. The companions are gathering. In their hands are no calculators, no spreadsheets, no digital devices. Yet they are about to build a civilization that will govern trade, measure wealth, calculate inheritance, determine calendars, record contracts, distribute charity, and eventually illuminate the world with knowledge.

This chapter is about the workshop where that process began.

We will learn how the human hand became a computational interface. We will explore the ancient science of Ḥisāb al-ʿUqūd, trace its journey across civilizations, and examine how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ transformed an inherited system into a public instrument of transparency, verification, and justice.

Before we speak about the House of Wisdom, before we speak about algebra, before we speak about the scholars of Baghdad, we must begin here.

In the dust of Madinah.

In the marketplace.

In the classroom.

With a hand raised in the sunlight.

Welcome to Ḥisāb.

The workshop is now open.

We are going to study the arithmetic that sat in the palm of the human hand for thousands of years before the first calculator was ever built.

Before we begin the lesson itself, however, we must answer a more important question:

image

Before we begin the lesson itself, however, we must answer a more important question:

What exactly did the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ contribute?

Because this chapter is not about claiming that the Prophet ﷺ invented fingers.

It is not about claiming that he invented counting.

It is not about claiming that mathematics suddenly appeared in Madinah out of nowhere.

His contribution was far more profound.

He took a system that already existed, purified it, standardized it, and opened it to everyone.

Only after we understand that contribution will we dive into the deep historical record, trace the lineage of this system across civilizations, and then finally enter the classroom itself.

But first, we begin where all civilizations begin:

With the marketplace.

THE PRE-EXISTING LIES: THE CLOTH OF SECRECY

image

Before the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reformed the markets, the commercial world operated on systemic asymmetry.

For centuries across the Roman Empire and the Near East, merchants used a predatory variation of finger-counting known as "Trading Under the Cloth" or "The Secret Handshake."

Instead of displaying prices openly, a broker and a seller would throw a heavy woolen cloth or a wide sleeve over their hands. Beneath the fabric, they would touch and interlock specific finger joints—manipulating the ancient Roman finger symbols to negotiate a price.

The system itself was not the problem.

The secrecy was.

The arithmetic was not corrupt.

The information environment surrounding it was.

The Illusion of the Market

Why did they do this?

To preserve market deception.

A merchant could sell the exact same bushel of grain to an elite Roman official for fifty coins and then immediately turn around and sell it to a desperate farmer for one hundred coins.

Because the negotiations happened entirely under the cloth, the public had no idea they were being price-gouged.

The ancient Roman proverb recorded by Cicero exposed the dark reality of this environment:

"He is an honest man with whom you can play micatio (finger-counting) in the dark."

The statement sounds harmless until you realize what it implies.

The system was so structurally dependent upon hidden information, insider knowledge, and asymmetrical advantage that honesty itself had to be tested in darkness.

The cloth became a shield.

The sleeve became a firewall.

The data disappeared from public view.

THE PROPHETIC RESET: OPEN SOURCE AUDITING

When the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah, he witnessed these exact speculative games dominating local marketplaces.

He did not merely tweak the rules.

He executed a structural intervention.

Just as he stripped the calendar of human manipulation and returned it to the open-source horizon, he did the exact same thing to commerce.

He outlawed Gharar (hidden risk and deception).

He prohibited hidden transactions.

He banned asymmetrical arrangements such as Munabadhah and other forms of commercial ambiguity where information was concealed from one party.

The direction of reform was always the same:

Bring hidden information into the light.

Make the transaction observable.

Make the system auditable.

Make the rules visible to everyone.

WHAT BELONGS TO THE PROPHET ﷺ

The Prophet's ﷺ revolutionary contribution was turning a tool of merchant-guild secrecy into an engine of public empowerment.

He took Ḥisāb al-ʿUqūd—Finger Reckoning—the pre-existing hardware of the world and established three uncheatable standards.

First, the hand had to come out from under the cloth.

Calculations, prices, measurements, and obligations had to be visible in the clear light of day so that buyer, seller, and passerby could all verify the transaction.

Second, he democratized verification itself.

Through body-based measurements such as the Mudd and through standardized human-scale calculations, ordinary people gained access to the same validation tools previously controlled by specialists and brokers.

A market-woman no longer needed a corrupt intermediary to tell her whether the scale was honest.

She could verify reality herself.

Third, he decentralized trust.

The market could not operate according to social rank.

The son of a chief and the son of a shepherd were subject to the same measurements, the same standards, and the same calculations.

Truth became symmetrical.

Verification became public.

Justice became measurable.

CHAPTER OPENING LAYOUT: THE TWO MARKETS

image

WELCOME TO ḤISĀB: THE CODE OF LIBERATION

Look closely at the ancient cipher map in .

For thousands of years before Islam, these precise hand gestures were trapped beneath a heavy cloth.

They were used by Roman tax agents, Byzantine elites, and commercial brokers to hide prices, conceal information, and execute insider deals beyond public scrutiny.

BEFORE THE PROPHET ﷺ: THE COVERT NETWORK

• Prices were a secret handshake.

• Data was hidden beneath sleeves and fabric.

• The market was an asymmetrical trap where the common person was systematically bled of value.

AFTER THE PROPHET ﷺ: THE PUBLIC OVERRIDE

• The cloth was ripped away.

• The hands were pulled into the blinding desert sun.

• The code became open-source.

THE PRE-PROPHETIC ERA: THE PROPHETIC STANDARDIZATION:

"Under the Cloth" (Deception) ──► "In the Light" (Symmetry)

Hidden Ledger Accounts Biometric Verification for All

====================================================================

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not invent your fingers.

But he liberated them.

He took one of the great computational languages of the ancient world and converted it into a tool of public accountability.

He established a market where what you see is what you get.

Where fraud is difficult to hide.

Where measurements belong to everyone.

Where verification belongs to everyone.

Where the ledger belongs to everyone.

Open your palms.

Pull your hands out of the dark.

Let's run the Medinan calculation.

In the next section we will leave the marketplace and enter the historical record itself. We will trace this remarkable system backward through Madinah, Byzantium, Rome, Greece, and Egypt, following the lineage of a computational interface that survived for more than four thousand years before arriving in the hands of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

RESEARCH & HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT: DACTYLONOMY (ḤISĀB AL-ʿUQŪD)

The Core Philosophy: Prophetic Optimization of Existing Systems

In the classical methodology of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, engineering a civilized standard rarely required inventing a system out of thin air if a functional, highly optimized infrastructure already existed.

His baseline approach always favored the path of least resistance and maximum accessibility for the masses.

Before the advent of Islam, the markets of the ancient world were already linked by a highly sophisticated, silent, uncheatable digital interface: finger reckoning—historically known as dactylonomy, and in Arabic as Ḥisāb al-Yad or Ḥisāb al-ʿUqūd.

The Prophet ﷺ adopted this universal commercial runtime, stripped it of merchant-guild secrecy, and turned it into the public baseline for legal, financial, and civil computation.

This chapter begins with a simple but important premise:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not invent an isolated mathematics from scratch.

He inherited a highly developed computational interface already moving across borders, civilizations, languages, and empires. What belongs to him is something different.

He standardized it.

He purified it.

He democratized it.

And he placed it into the hands of ordinary people.

Deep Chronology: Who Invented It and How Long Was It Used?

Civilization Approximate Era Utilization & Implementation Ancient Egypt ~2000 BCE+ (4,000+ years ago) Wall paintings from over 4,000 years ago explicitly depict Egyptian overseers and scribes tracking inventory and grain yields using structural finger gestures. Classical Greece ~5th Century BCE Referred to by playwrights and philosophers. In Greek assemblies, holding up hands in specific configurations was used to tally massive public votes and calculate financial deficits. The Roman Empire ~3rd Century BCE – 4th Century CE Fully standardized into a complete mathematical syntax allowing calculations up to 1,000,000 on a single human body. The Medinan State 7th Century CE (9 AH) Adopted as the computational engine for the Diwans (treasuries), marketplace auditing, and astronomical timelines.

The timeline matters because it reveals something extraordinary.

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he was not looking at a primitive tribal world with no computational infrastructure.

He was standing at the intersection of thousands of years of accumulated human experimentation.

The hardware already existed.

The challenge was making it serve justice.

The Roman Connection: "The Arithmetic of the Romans and the Arabs"

The Romans were obsessed with this system.

Latin literary sources from the 3rd century BCE up to the late antique era contain constant references to finger-reckoning.

In Roman society, chariot race betting, merchant transactions, tax receipts, and commercial accounting were tracked instantly on the knuckles.

Merchants even developed a variation called Morra—still played in Italy today—where prices could be negotiated silently under a cloth by touching specific finger joints so competing buyers could not see the deal.

Because this finger matrix was preserved by the Byzantine Empire directly bordering the Arabian Peninsula, early Islamic administrative texts explicitly referred to this type of mathematics as:

"The Arithmetic of the Romans and the Arabs" (Ḥisāb al-Rūm wa-l-ʿArab).

The system crossed borders because mathematics does not care about language.

A finger position in Rome could be understood in Syria.

A gesture in Alexandria could be understood in Arabia.

The interface was already global.

How the System Worked Before Paper and Numerals

Before the modern symbols "1, 2, 3" or cheap paper existed, you could not simply pull out a ledger and write down long division.

Calculations had to be performed entirely inside the processor of the mind.

The fingers functioned as a form of biometric cache memory.

If a merchant needed to multiply 46 × 28, he would break the problem into subsets—40 × 20, 40 × 8, 6 × 20, 6 × 8—calculate the sub-totals mentally, and then lock intermediate values into specific hand positions so the brain would not lose the data string while processing the next step.

The hand became temporary storage.

The joints became memory locations.

The body itself became the interface.

And that brings us to the opening screen.

Because before we can learn the mathematics of Madinah, we must first understand the hardware that made it possible.

CHAPTER SEVEN — THE SYSTEM IN THE PALMS

A PRACTICAL CLINIC IN MEDINAN ALGORITHMS

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ finished establishing the universal metrics, he did not hand his companions a textbook; he handed them back their own hands.

He took an entire society and enrolled them in a living laboratory where data entry happened on the knuckles and error correction was as simple as looking at the sky.

image

If you are going to understand this civilization, you cannot just read about it. You have to run the code yourself.

Below is your official syllabus for the Medinan Calculation Clinic.

We are going to step directly onto the dirt floor of the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawī) in the year 9 AH.

Strip away the digital screens. Drop the paper ledgers. Open your palms.

LESSON 1: The Base-10 Processor (Ḥisāb al-ʿUqūd)

The Objective: You are standing in the bustling marketplace of Madinah. A merchant claims he has just sorted 73 bales of premium dates from the northern oases.

You need to verify and visually lock that exact number onto your right hand using the ancient Arabic position-counting system approved by the Prophetic court.

The Hardware Layout

Your right hand is a standalone multi-digit processor.

It handles Units (1–9) and Tens (10–90) simultaneously without any overlapping data lines.

  • The Outer Registers (Units 1–9): Managed exclusively by the pinky, ring, and middle fingers.

  • The Core Registers (Tens 10–90): Managed exclusively by the index finger and the thumb.

Initialize the Processor

Right Hand Open

Extend your right hand completely flat, palm facing outward toward the merchant.

Your current screen is blank.

Your accumulator is set to zero.

Load the Units (3)

The Lower Triad

Bend your pinky finger, your ring finger, and your middle finger down tightly into the meat of your palm.

Keep your index finger and thumb pointing straight up.

You have just isolated and hard-locked the number 3.

Load the Tens (70)

The Core Controller

Take your thumb and snap it completely inward across your palm, placing its tip right against the inside base of your index finger.

Now, curve your index finger down over the back of your thumb's knuckle, forming a closed, circular claw.

The Readout

Look down at your hand.

Your bottom three fingers are clamped shut, while your index and thumb form a precise loop.

You are physically holding the exact, immutable cipher for 73.

A business partner standing across the loud market can log your audit without a single word being shouted this image might be wrong it's probably wrong..

image

LESSON 2: Volumetric Material Auditing (The P2P Check)

The Objective: A supply caravan unloads a leather sack of grain.

The trader insists the volume is exactly 1 Ṣāʿ.

You suspect the trader is using an altered, non-standard container to skim a fraction of the profit.

You must execute an open-source, peer-to-peer verification using your own body as the supreme court.

The System Parameters

  • 1 Ṣāʿ = 4 Mudds

  • 1 Mudd = The absolute volume of two average hands cupped together

The Execution Sequence

Deploy the Measuring Vessel

Bring your left and right hands side-by-side.

Press the outer pinky edges tightly against each other to create a seamless seal.

Cup your palms deeply, creating a natural human bowl.

This is your Mudd hardware node.

Extract the Sample

Scoop the grain directly out of the merchant’s sack using your cupped hands.

Fill your hands completely to the brim each time.

Pour each handful into a clean validation pile.

System Analysis

Count the total number of full, double-handful scoops the merchant's container yields before running dry.

The Final Verdict

If the trader's container is entirely empty after exactly 4 scoops, the data matches the ledger.

(4 Mudds = 1 Ṣāʿ)

If it runs out at 3.5 scoops, the validation fails.

You have exposed market fraud using nothing but the skin of your palms.

image

LESSON 3: The Clouded Horizon (The Fail-Safe Bug Fix)

The Objective: It is the 29th night of the month.

The entire state is waiting to know if the new calendar block begins tomorrow.

You are stationed with the horizon-watchmen at the edge of the Madinah oasis.

Suddenly, a massive sandstorm sweeps across the western valley, turning the sky completely black with dust.

The moon is invisible.

The Logical Protocol

  • If Input (Sight) = True → Month = 29 Days

  • If Input (Sight) = False/Noise → Month = Fail-Safe Default (30 Days)

The Execution Sequence

Read Sensor Status

Look toward the western sky.

The visual noise level is at 100%.

The data path is corrupted by dust.

Bypass Human Speculation

Do not allow the watchmen to argue, make guesses based on yesterday's cloud patterns, or debate political preferences.

Execute the Override Code

Shut down the observation post.

Open your hands and deploy the ultimate algorithmic command left by the Teacher:

"Complete the count to thirty."

The Final Verdict

Tomorrow is automatically registered across the entire global network as Day 30.

Because everyone follows the exact same logical rule, the entire civilization stays perfectly synced.

image

The Final Algorithm

Ultimately, this biometric architecture was never meant to remain a theory preserved in historical texts—it was engineered to be lived.

By stripping the metrics of civilization away from elite monopolies and anchoring them directly into your own hands, your sight, and your physical stride, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave humanity a timeless, uncheatable operating system.

Now that you have completed this layout of the Medinan Workshop, close your eyes, step onto that illuminated sand, and practice these exact algorithms with your own fingers.

The ledger of time is officially open source.

The code is compiled.

The digital ink is locked.

IN CONCLUSION

THE HOUSE OF WISDOM RETURNS

The work of preservation does not belong to historians alone.

It belongs to all of us.

The House of Wisdom Project has begun. A foundation stone has already been placed through the One Page, One World initiative, and the vision is simple:

To preserve what is being forgotten.

To recover what has been lost.

To build a new educational curriculum using AI, historical research, visual storytelling, and modern technology so that future generations can experience the knowledge of the past rather than merely read about it.

This is an open invitation.

To students.

To scholars.

To teachers.

To technologists.

To historians.

To artists.

And especially to the governments, institutions, foundations, and ministries of the Muslim world.

If you believe our history deserves preservation, if you believe our children deserve access to the intellectual inheritance of their civilization, then join us.

Help us preserve it together.

Help us build it together.

Help us teach it together.

The House of Wisdom was never merely a building.

It was a civilization-wide commitment to knowledge.

And that commitment can live again.

RELIVING THE PAST

In a few moments you will watch a demonstration of the game of Morra.

Do not dismiss it as a simple game.

What survives today as entertainment is actually a living fossil.

A surviving fragment of an ancient computational culture.

A glimpse into a world where numbers moved through fingers, calculations lived in the body, and transactions occurred through shared mathematical language.

For thousands of years human beings used systems like these to calculate, negotiate, remember, verify, and trade.

Most of that world has disappeared.

The marketplaces are gone.

The empires are gone.

The scribes are gone.

But traces remain.

And those traces deserve preservation.

History is being erased faster than it is being remembered.

The answer is not merely to archive it.

The answer is to relive it.

To recreate it.

To teach it.

To experience it.

To build places, spaces, classrooms, workshops, museums, simulations, and living curricula where the past can once again be seen, touched, understood, and celebrated.

The House of Wisdom exists for exactly that purpose.

Now watch the game.

Watch carefully.

You are not looking at a relic.

You are looking at an echo.

Watch "Do you know how to play Morra?" on YouTube

CHAPTER EIGHT

ZAKAT:

THE DIVINE MATHEMATICS OF WEALTH

The hand has counted.

The measurements have been verified.

The marketplace has been opened.

Now a new question emerges.

What happens after wealth is measured?

Who receives it?

Who is protected?

Who is forgotten?

Who is responsible?

Remarkably, Islam did not leave these questions to chance.

It did not leave them to the generosity of rulers.

It did not leave them to the mood of the wealthy.

Just as the calendar was fixed.

Just as measurements were fixed.

Just as verification was fixed.

The circulation of wealth was fixed.

In the next chapter we will enter one of the most sophisticated economic systems ever revealed:

Zakat.

A system where mathematics becomes mercy.

Where accounting becomes justice.

Where wealth is purified through circulation.

And where the poor are guaranteed a share not through charity, but through right.

The workshop continues see you in the next chapter inshallah however we will be revisiting the politics of the calendar and taxes on everything in between inshallah keep me in your prayers some of this work will be transferred to the House of wisdom later when we begin to rebuild history itself inshallah
