A Divine Promise: Allah’s Mercy Written Upon Himself
A Verse Unlike Any Other
Imagine standing in front of the ocean, watching its endless waves stretching beyond what the eye can see. Now imagine that vastness multiplied infinitely—this is just a fraction of the mercy of Allah.
And yet, in Surah Al-An’am, verse 12, Allah tells us something beyond comprehension:
"Say, ‘To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and earth?’ Say, ‘To Allah. He has written mercy upon Himself. He will certainly gather you on the Day of Resurrection, which is beyond all doubt. Those who deceive themselves will not believe."
(Surah Al-An’am 6:12)
Pause for a moment. Allah is revealing something about Himself that no creation would ever have the right to know. He is the Supreme Creator, the Owner of the Universe. He could have chosen wrath, punishment, or indifference—but instead, He has written mercy upon Himself.
This is not just a statement. This is a law He has placed upon Himself. And this, dear reader, changes everything.
The Divine Contract: What Does “Kataba” (كَتَبَ) Mean?
The word كَتَبَ (kataba, "He has written") in Arabic signifies something binding, unchangeable, and permanent.
When humans write contracts, they are legal obligations.
When kings write decrees, they become law.
But when Allah writes something upon Himself, it is absolute reality, unbreakable by anyone, even Himself.
If Allah had simply said "I am merciful", it would have been enough. But by saying "I have written mercy upon Myself", He is making it known that His mercy is not just an attribute—it is a divine law He will never abandon.
The Balance Between Mercy and Justice
Some might ask: If Allah is so merciful, why does He allow suffering?
The answer is hidden within this very verse.
1️⃣ Mercy is His default – Before judgment, before punishment, before anything else, mercy is the first law.
2️⃣ Justice is necessary – If there were no consequences for wrongdoing, the world would be full of oppression.
3️⃣ Trials are mercy in disguise – The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"When Allah loves a person, He tests them."
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2396)
Hardships are not a sign of Allah’s anger, but rather a way to elevate us spiritually.
Hadith That Confirms This Verse
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ narrated that when Allah created the creation, He wrote in His Book, which is with Him above the Throne:
"Indeed, My mercy prevails over My wrath."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 3194; Muslim, 2751)
This is a direct explanation of Surah Al-An’am 6:12. Even when Allah punishes, His mercy is still greater.
What Does This Mean for New Muslims?
If you have just embraced Islam, this verse is one of the most comforting revelations you will ever encounter.
✅ You are never beyond Allah’s mercy.
✅ Your past sins do not define your future.
✅ Every time you repent, Allah’s door is open.
Allah does not need you, yet He chooses to forgive you. This is not human mercy—this is divine mercy.
The Linguistic Beauty of the Verse
Now, let’s step into the depth of Arabic linguistics to appreciate the profound precision of this verse.
1️⃣ كَتَبَ (Kataba) – “He wrote”
A verb of permanence and certainty.
Shows that mercy is not temporary or conditional.
2️⃣ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِ (ʿalā nafsihi) – “Upon Himself”
This is an act of Allah’s own will, not because anyone forces Him.
No creation has the right to demand mercy from Allah, yet He gives it freely.
3️⃣ لَيَجۡمَعَنَّكُمۡ (Layajmaʿannakum) – “He will certainly gather you”
The emphatic form shows that the Day of Judgment is beyond doubt.
4️⃣ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُمۡ (Alladhīna khasirū anfusahum) – “Those who have lost themselves”
It does not say “Allah has lost them”, but “they lost themselves.”
Disbelief is a form of self-destruction.
Final Reflection: The Greatest Gift
Allah could have kept His mercy hidden. He could have left us to wonder whether He is merciful or not. But instead, He chose to write it upon Himself and reveal it to us.
This is the greatest gift of knowledge that no human could ever comprehend without divine revelation.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed by life, remember:
