How to Build a Side Hustle Around a Full-Time Job

I think a lot of us accidentally turn a side hustle into a second job.

You finish the actual job.

Then you come home, open the laptop again, and apparently begin Shift Two.

And somehow we call this “freedom.”

I’ve definitely done this.

Whenever I find a new side-hustle idea, my first instinct is usually to add more.

More tools. More platforms. More things to learn. More tabs open for absolutely no reason.

But I was talking to Jamie recently, and one thing from that conversation stuck with me.

A minimalist side hustle isn’t necessarily about doing less.

It’s about deciding how much effort actually fits into your life.

That sounds obvious.

Apparently, it was not obvious enough for me.

If you have a full-time job, family, hobbies, or just some desire to occasionally do absolutely nothing, maybe the better question isn’t:

“How fast can I grow this?”

Maybe it’s:

“What can I keep doing for the next two years without hating my life?”

That might mean five hours a week.

It might mean one hour a day.

It might mean growing much slower than the person on Twitter posting screenshots of their $37,000 month.

You’re allowed to play a different game.

Start with one simple thing. A newsletter. A small digital product. A short book. Something you can build without needing a logo, a funnel, six subscriptions and a minor identity crisis.

We went much deeper into this in a short seven-minute episode of Sustainable Side Hustle.

If you’re trying to build something around an already busy life, this one is probably for you.
