Kalainithan Kalaichelvan is a Tamil-Canadian director and screenwriter whose work carries both cinematic precision and a deep emotional pulse. Best known for his 2025 short film Karupy—which earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Drama at the 14th Canadian Screen Awards in 2026—Kalainithan has steadily built a reputation as a filmmaker to watch, one story at a time.
Before Karupy, he sharpened his voice through a run of short films and music videos, then took that momentum into the Canadian Film Centre, where Karupy was created as his student project. His visual storytelling has already drawn national attention beyond the film world as well: in 2022, he received a Juno Award nomination for Video of the Year for Shan Vincent de Paul’s “Neeye Oli.” In this Occhi Magazine feature, we sit down with Kalainithan to talk about craft, culture, and his film ‘Till the Milk Runs Dry’.
