In Conversation with Composer Olivia Murphy

Olivia Murphy has established herself as a composer and artist working in large ensemble music, developing a distinct personal voice. After receiving the Peter Whittingham Jazz Development Award in 2021, she formed her Jazz Orchestra and has performed across the UK, including dates at Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Vortex Jazz Club in London, and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. In 2025, Murphy became a Resident Musical Director for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, following her earlier role as composer-in-residence from 2020 to 2022. This November, the NYJO Blueprint Orchestra will make its EFG London Jazz Festival debut at Milton Court, with a programme focused on jazz trombone pioneer and educator Bob Brookmeyer. We spoke with Olivia about her career and the upcoming performance.
