Kelsey Nerrie is an award-winning filmmaker and writer based in Richmond, Virginia—and since Occhi first spoke with her, her momentum has only intensified. Her short film Repercussion(s) recently took home Best Dramatic Short at the Valkyrie International Film Festival, and she earned a Best Director nomination at the New Ark Independent Film Festival.
Kelsey brings a rare blend of creative instinct and industry insight. She spent seven years launching and managing a localization team at Deluxe, while also working extensively as an in-house and freelance script reader. Rooted in dark humour, flawed characters, and a dry wit that cuts through tragedy, Kelsey’s storytelling refuses to be boxed into a single genre. Instead, she gravitates toward the uncomfortable, honest edges of the human experience—creating work that lingers, provokes, and invites reflection. We caught up with her to talk about her journey, her process, and what drives the stories she chooses to tell.
