East African artists to perform at Madaraka Festival 2023 in four US cities
Three East African acts, Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo and Kenya’s Sauti Sol and King Kaka, have been scheduled to perform at the Madaraka Festival 2023, which will take place in four US cities from 16 May.
The festival, which aims to deepen the relationship between African and African American communities, and foster partnerships with other global communities, will visit New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Seattle, and is curated to empower cultural diversity and inclusion across the African diaspora in Seattle and across the US.
Festival proceeds to support community-led change in the US and Africa
The festival tour is sponsored by Amazon, Microsoft, Alaska Airlines, KEXP and other organizations, and part of the proceeds will go to One Vibe Africa, Mama Hope and the Refugee Artisan Initiative.
These organizations are supporting community-led change and impacting over 3.5 million people in the United States and Africa. In 2020, the festival raised seed capital for 106 women in three Kenyan slums who run small-scale businesses.
Last year’s festival attended by more than 10,000 people
Last year's edition of the festival was held in Seattle and attended by more than 10,000 people, with over 18 million viewers reached digitally. It was headlined by Nigerian Afrobeats star D'Banj.
The festival seeks to shift narratives and honor cultural dynamics while creating an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the cultural diversity and inclusiveness of the African diaspora.
