The Missing Piece in Bedridden Care

The Missing Piece in Bedridden Care

May 26, 2025

During my time as a content creator for a physiotherapy center, I had the privilege of working closely with experienced professionals in the field. I saw up close how transformative physiotherapy can be, especially for patients who are bedridden.

Many people assume that once a loved one becomes bedridden, it's enough to focus on feeding schedules, hygiene, and medical treatments. But there's one crucial aspect of care that often gets overlooked: movement.

Here's why hiring a physiotherapist for a bedridden family members isn't just helpful —it's essential:

Preventing Bedsores and Complications

One of the most common complications for bedridden individuals is pressure ulcers (also known as bedsores). These can be painful, dangerous, and even life-threatening if left untreated.

Physiotherapists know how to position the body properly, improve blood circulation, and apply passive exercises that reduce the risk of these ulcers forming.

Maintaining Joint Mobility and Muscle Strength

Even when someone can't move on their own, their body still benefits from movement. Physiotherapists can perform passive range-of-motion exercises that help maintain joint flexibility and muscle tone.

Without this, muscles can become stiff and weak, leading to long-term complications like contractures.

Improving Breathing and Circulation

Lying down for long periods can affect lung function and increase the risk of pneumonia. Simple chest physiotherapy techniques like percussion and breathing exercises (even done with assistance) can make a big difference.

I remember watching a therapist gently tap on a patient's back to help loosen mucus — it was a simple action that helped avoid a hospital stay.

Promoting Mental and Emotional Well-being

This one surprised me the most. Physiotherapists don't just treat the body — they often lift the spirit. The sessions become a routine that patients look forward to, giving them something to anticipate and engage with.

It helps them feel seen, valued, and not forgotten. Even the smallest physical progress, celebrated together, can have a huge emotional impact.

Educating the Family and Caregivers

One of the most underrated roles of a physiotherapist is being an educator.

They teach family members and caregivers how to handle transfers, avoid injuries, and support mobility in safe ways. It creates a safer environment for everyone involved, not just the patient.

From what I've seen and learned, physiotherapy isn't just about helping people "walk again." It's about quality of life — even for those who may never leave their bed.

If you're caring for a bedridden loved one, consider reaching out to a physiotherapist. Not just for their body, but for their comfort, dignity, and hope.
