That One Exercise I Thought Was a Joke (Until I Couldn't Breathe)

When I worked as a content creator at a physiotherapy center, I spent a lot of time listening to physiotherapists talk about exercises that actually help people.

Real, it's simple. No equipment needed. Just you and the floor at your home.

The plank.

Just hold your body in a straight line and... that's it. Easy, right?

Wrong 😂

The first time I tried it, I lasted 5 seconds before collapsing. What's good about this exercise? Why the physios loved it?

So here's a breakdown of why planks are worth the hype — even if you hate every second of them (like me lol).

What Exactly Is a Plank?

A plank is an isometric core exercise — you hold a position without moving to build strength and stability.

The basic version looks like a push-up, but instead of going up and down, you freeze. That's it. That's the torture.

(Just kidding... sort of 😅)

Why the Physios Recommend It?

From what I learned working at the center (and bothering the physios with 101 questions), here's why they swear by planks:

  • Full core activation — not just your abs, but also your back, shoulders, hips, and even glutes.

  • Improves posture — especially helpful if you sit a lot (guilty).

  • Reduces risk of injury — a strong core = better body control.

  • Supports lower back — this was a big reason it was recommended to many patients.

  • It's joint-friendly — unlike squats or crunches, a plank doesn't put stress on you joints if done correctly.

  • No equipment needed — just your body and a floor.

But Yen, I Can't Even Last 10 Seconds!

Oh trust me, same here when I started. The physiotherapists always told me:
"Don't focus on the time. Focus on your form first."

So here's what I did (and still do):

  • Start with short holds — 10 seconds, rest, repeat.

  • Modify if needed — do it on your knees or against a wall.

  • Use a timer with a fun sound, not a stress alarm (I put my fav idol's sound lol 잘했어 <3)

  • Add it to your routine without overthinking it.

Even doing 20-30 seconds a day can build up over time.

My Honest Thoughts?

Planks will humble you. They'll make you question your life choices. They'll also make you stronger — little by little.

It's one of those exercises that the therapists always recommended because it's safe, scalable, and works your body without needing fancy equipment.

And now that I'm no longer working in the center, I carry those small lessons with me — and yes, that includes the dreaded plank.

So give it a try. Even if it's just 10 seconds.

Even if you shake. Even if you grumble through it (like I do).

It still counts. And it still helps.

If this post made you want to lie down on the floor and try a plank, feel free to support me with a coffee ☕^^

It keeps me writing — and keeps me honest about how much I'm sweating behind the scenes.

We're all figuring this out together!
