Lula Does It Again

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil's presidential runoff on Sunday, Oct. 25, beating Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, by about 51.8% to 48.2%. That's a margin of more than 4 million votes. At 80 years old, Lula locked in another term.

The Loser Won't Accept It

Flávio Bolsonaro, a Trump ally, rejected the result. Brazil's Supreme Court had extended voting by two hours on Election Day, but the votes cast in that window were a tiny slice of the total, about 0.03%, fewer than 35,000 ballots.

The Court Order

Then it got bigger than an election. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to hand over his passports and stay in the country, citing the risk he would flee and his significant financial resources. The case centers on alleged ties to a lawyer named Willer Tomaz, who is accused of laundering more than $1 billion through a fraud scheme. Tomaz denies it. A separate investigation is looking at possible illegal foreign money in Bolsonaro's campaign.

The Getaway

Bolsonaro missed the 24-hour deadline to surrender his passport. According to reports, his Brazilian and diplomatic passports were canceled, but he has held Italian citizenship since 2023. He made his way from northern Argentina to Guayaquil, Ecuador, and then flew to Miami with his wife and two daughters, landing at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Argentina said he entered on valid travel documents.

Lula Fires Back

Lula called the move a shameful act. He also took a shot at Bolsonaro, saying people with nothing to hide have nothing to fear, and reminded everyone that he himself was arrested in 2018 and later had those convictions thrown out.

Trump Weighs In

President Trump said he would approve of Flávio Bolsonaro coming to the U.S. and called the family fine people. He called the election very strange and said it looked like another rigged election, without offering any evidence. Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said Trump's claims were completely wrong.

The Bolsonaro Name

This isn't the family's first run-in with the courts. Jair Bolsonaro was convicted of trying to overturn his 2022 election loss and sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison. He's serving it under house arrest because of poor health and denies any wrongdoing.

The Bottom Line

Lula won at the ballot box, and his opponent answered with a plane ticket to Florida. Now a man Brazil's courts wanted kept in the country is sitting in Miami, and the U.S. may soon have to decide what to do about it.

How This Impacts Americans

  • Florida is now home base for a political figure under investigation in Brazil, and any request to send him back could land on the U.S. government.

  • Trump's "rigged election" claim strains relations with Latin America's largest economy, a major U.S. trading partner.

  • Washington and Brazil have already clashed over tariffs tied to the Bolsonaro family's legal fights, and Americans buy a lot of Brazilian coffee, beef and orange juice.

  • Brazil is a founding BRICS member, so its next term under Lula shapes how that bloc deals with the U.S.
