🚨 CAMPAIGN: Help Finance Poppa-Jan's Multi-State Grandchild Pursuit Tour! 🚨
Official Mission: Grandfather Activity Support Adventures (GASA)
Active Operations: 2003 – Present
Operational Status: GPS programed , Full Tank of Gas, Windows Down, Pulling Out.
The Cause: I Have Too Many Talented Grandchildren
Some grandfathers take up golf. My crew demands attention and are busy earning it. They are awesome in Academics and Athletics. They have won and been awarded Students of the Month, Player of the Year, and stuff I don't know about ... My crew stays BUSY!
I chose high-octane, multi-state logistics.
-- Staying connected to my grandchildren is a full-time, high-stakes military operation that requires the tactical precision of a Master General. I am managing five distinct athletic schedules across high school lights, college stadiums, regional auditoriums, and YOUR locations spanning multiple state lines.
My calendar looks like an air traffic control board. I get gas from Costco and Sam's Club. And I am officially launching this fundraiser to keep the Grandchild Pursuit Tour funded and on the road!
Where the Funds Go: A Breakdown of the Madness
1. The East Coast Gymnastics & Dance Marathon 🤸♀️💃
Two of my granddaughters compete in gymnastics and dance up and down the East Coast. Let me tell you: these are not short, hour-long events. These are all-day endurance tests inside packed venues that start before dawn. I strongly support my daughter with these early distant events, because I haven't made an 8am call yet. I will need beer money while waiting home for the competition results.
The Cost: Tolls between cities and mountain short-cuts, parking and admission fees, $18 hot dogs, climbing high steps and the stiff and cold medal stadium benches that test my lower back's will to survive. However, Hampton venue has great fish dinners.
The Reward: Seeing their smiles in gold-medal moments makes every mile (and every stiff joint) worth it! And the Fish Dinner (Plus, their parents do ALL the heavy lifting—I just show up, cheer loud, and take photos!). But its hard work!
2. Friday Night Lights: Local High School Security Detail 🏈
Friday nights belong to high school football. Because the games are local, I can drop in, catch my grandson in action, and keep him on his toes.
The Highlight: High school football is always thrilling—partly because security is always present to keep the parents from losing their minds in the stands. I stay safe in the bleachers behind my camera lens!
3. College Basketball: The Unknown Schedule Anxiety 🏀
Another granddaughter just made the big leap from high school hardwood to her freshman year of college basketball!
The Current Crisis: Waiting for the official season schedule to drop is pure, unfiltered torture for my calendar. As soon as those dates go live, I need to react like a day-trader to book game-day dates and locations!
4. The Long-Haul College Football Gridirons 🚗✈️
This is where my travel planning turns into pure, high-stakes logistics:
The 7-Hour Pittsburgh Operation: One grandson plays seven hours away in Pittsburgh. Attending his home games requires a full weekend deployment, multi-state highway navigation, and hotel bookings. Plus, I’m planning road trips to his away games—including an annual matchup in Georgia that doubles as a reunion with my nephew in Atlanta!
The Texas Flyover: Another grandson plays deep in the heart of Texas. While I rely heavily on YouTube livestreams for most games (and debrief with him on the phone right after), I am carving out the budget to fly out and put eyes on him in person at least once a season.
The Grandfather’s Strategic Operations Checklist
Every single weekend requires strict tactical execution:
Calendar Syncing: Merging high school Friday games, college slates, and weekend dance/gymnastics rosters into one master map without triggering a temporal anomaly.
Fuel & Lodging Procurement: Dodging high-season hotel prices and toll roads, and fighting inflated gas prices.
Digital Command Center: Triple-checking YouTube links and kickoff times so I don't miss a single snap in Texas.
Snack Strategy: Keeping enough water, and and hitting Wendy's to survive untold hours on I-95, I-81, I-75, I-70, I-40, and various state and federal routes.
How You Can Help Keep Poppa-Jan on the Road!
Keeping up with high-performing, multi-state athletes and some close friends takes serious work, endless gas stops, a mountain of stadium admission tickets not to include the breakfast and lunch dates with friends in the areas of the events.
Traveling to visit Friends and being in the stands with my camera to capture My Grand's Moments is what it’s all about for ME.
