The Practice of Attention

Presence Is a Form of Generosity

Most people walk past this branch without noticing the droplets, the new growth, or the intricate patterns hidden among the needles. Yet presence begins with noticing. The same attention that helps us see the beauty of a pine branch can help us see one another more clearly. In that way, attention becomes an act of generosity.

One lesson I keep returning to is this:

Nature teaches us how to pay attention.

And paying attention may be one of the most loving things we can do.

When we slow down enough to hear birdsong, notice shifting light through the trees, or watch clouds moving across the sky, we are practicing presence.

That practice doesn't stay in the forest.

It follows us home.

The more carefully we listen outdoors, the more carefully we learn to listen to the people in our lives.

Presence is a form of generosity.

It says:

I am here.

I am listening.

I am paying attention.

In a world filled with distraction, that gift is becoming increasingly rare.

And increasingly valuable.

Today's invitation:

Take five minutes outside.

Leave your phone in your pocket.

Notice one thing you've never noticed before.

Then ask yourself:

How might this same quality of attention transform one of my relationships?

Thank you for being here and for supporting this work.
