Addressing the Algorithm of Negativity to Elevate Your Spirit

Sep 19, 2022

I was listening to a YouTube video from HINDZ titled “little things I did to TRANSFORM out of a negative space”, and one of the principles that he stated was “Everything I consume matters”. He went further into that anatomy by discussing how he altered his food consumption, the music he listened to, and what he was reading. It was a very informative video on solidifying the self-love and respect that you have for yourself, and for myself, I know that on my journey to healing, what I consumed was the very first thing that I needed to redirect my soul towards true self-love and freedom.

One of the main things that I consumed, directly and indirectly, was social media, and the algorithm that I was responsible for refining. Social media algorithms are intended to curate a custom timeline of suggestions of content you enjoy based on your previous interactions. So, for further purpose, I will focus on Twitter, as that is where I spend most of my social media time, and also the main culprit of the negative algorithm that I created. On Twitter, you are presented with suggested tweets that you may like, or tweets surrounding topics that suit your interests. The more you engage with a certain topic or style of tweets, the more these types of tweets will show up on your timeline.

Whether or not you realize it, you reshare, or retweet posts that validate your emotions and your stances on various topics. If you read back on your timeline, you will easily find a pattern of where your mindset was at that moment. In some cases, a timeline is also called your “feed”, and it is feeding you validation, and if you are trying to validate a negative mindset, by interacting with negative content, your feed will continue to feed you more of the same. And the more you consume your negative feed, the more your negativity will become validated which will make it very difficult to break the cycle of your negative mindset.

I recently started a new Twitter account, because I realized that I was using viral tweets, and other suggested tweets on my old timeline to have some validation for my emotional trauma. It was to the point, that every time I saw a tweet that was focused on how I felt at that moment, and how I thought I should act and react; I commented, liked, and re-shared it. But what was happening is that soon I was surrounded by tweets that instructed me to move in a way that wasn’t conducive to my spiritual growth, but instead to stroke the ego that I wanted to reduce.

If my old account had a theme, it would be “it’s cool to be cold”. The negative algorithm that I created was clashing with the spiritual and self-love journey that I was on. It was difficult to compile thoughts of love, passion, forgiveness, accountability, gentleness, and joy when all I consumed and shared was content that focused on the complete opposite of that. For instance, it is more than likely that I would see a popular tweet that will tell me to close my heart instead of opening it, to forget instead of forgiving, to cut off instead of connecting. Nothing but content that I “trauma bonded” with kept me locked in the trauma I had because I was constantly validating it every time I interacted.

To realign your spirit and point it in the direction of positivity, love, and joy, you have to make a conscious effort and take action by removing yourself from anything that influences a mind state that you are trying to evolve from. My new Twitter account is focused on my emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical personal development. I worked carefully to interact only with content that pointed to where I wanted to be, as opposed to where I was. I had to take accountability and acknowledge that I absorb my environment and would use content to console me and empower any negative feelings that I had. I had to do a lot of inner work to ask myself if what I perceived in the first place was accurate and if what was surrounding my clarity was negativity stroking my emotions that arose from invalid perception. Everyone’s trauma response is to not take accountability for how they act and react to events, and instead find ways to shut down a situation or a connection. There is no room to learn lessons, acknowledge your triggers, and use those as markers of where you need to improve your spirit.

To take control of the social media content that you consume, which is filled with so much ego and lack of accountability is to either alter your algorithm or start completely fresh. The best plan of action for yourself depends on how established you are on your current social media. There’s no logistical information on how quickly your algorithm can change, so if you have been enabling a negative algorithm for a long time, it may be best to just start a brand-new account, or at least an alternate account. You may have heard of the term “burner account”, which is a seemingly anonymous account that allows you to engage in other content that may not be as “graceful” as you want to show in the forefront. Well, in this case, I would suggest creating something I call a “flourish” account. This flourish account will be intended to do just that, help you flourish. You intend to create and build your algorithm by following positive accounts and focusing on creating an algorithm that points your spirit in the direction of where you want to be, instead of where you are at. This account will be intended to feed your soul, as opposed to feeding your ego. Once you begin to build and engage with this account, you will start to feel different, and your thought patterns and mental state will begin to flourish just as intended.

So, take this time to evaluate yourself, as well as the social media that you consume. Take a look at your feed and see what the algorithm has built for you. Do the inner work to realign with your soul’s purpose to align yourself in the positive direction that you need to travel in. Do whatever it takes to get yourself out of the negative cycle that you are in. If you have to walk away or reduce the time you spend on your current accounts, do whatever it takes for positive self-love. Whether that means working hard to remold your current algorithm or creating a flourish account, take the accountability and steps to fight back against the negative content that surrounds you.

**If you create a flourish account, I would love to connect with you! Send me a follow on my personal-development flourish account at https://twitter.com/N_E_O__G_L_O, let me know if you created a new account so that I can support your journey! **
