How Dark Is Your Sky? Testing the Lunatico Lanternfish

Oct 17, 2026

The LunaticoAstro Lanternfish is a brand new tool to measure sky brightness. It gives you the MPSAS (Magnitudes per square arc second) value of the sky to give you an idea of your sky quality. Bortle scales are a really nice way to understand this but these readings put a measured number on it.

This also comes with a fancy web interface and a way to control it remotely. I took this to Death Valley Observatories where the readings were all around high Bortle 3 due to the atmosphere glowing from the Milky Way Galaxy.

My Lanternfish may have a little bug though. I have an open request with LunaticoAstro because I've consistently gotten readings of over 27. The max we should expect to see is around 22. I usually disregard anything too high (or too low) but they are looking into whether it's an actual bug.

If anyone would like to order one, they provided the coupon NazLantern10 to give the first 50 people 10% off: https://lunaticoastro.com/lanternfish-sky-quality-meter/

Note: Shipping isn't cheap. And neither is the tariff. I was hit with both so although this product costs $199 (in the US), expect to pay another $50-70 in shipping/tariffs.

Second node: I look blue in my basement because I messed up the white balance with my camera. Should be fixed in the next video.
