When we meditate on the Psalms, we journey through the different valleys of the psalmists’ emotions. As we carefully examine these inspired writings and seek the truth revealed through them, we discover how God has revealed Himself through the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Psalms reveal God as the Creator, the King, the loving Father, the faithful God, and the gracious Lord who cares for His children. They also reveal His authority, holiness, righteousness, mercy, and everlasting promises.
Today, we are meditating on Psalm 2, a poetic and prophetic Scripture that points us toward the King of the universe and His Anointed One, Jesus Christ. The psalm begins by asking, “Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed” (Psalm 2:1–2). The “Anointed One” points prophetically to Christ.
The nations and rulers say, “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!” (Psalm 2:3). Yet the response of God is completely different: “He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them” (Psalm 2:4). God is not threatened by human rebellion. He remains sovereign over His creation and over every earthly ruler. He will speak in His anger and bring His righteous judgment (Psalm 2:5).
Then the Psalm clearly declares God’s appointed King: “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain” (Psalm 2:6). The passage continues with the Father’s declaration, “You are My Son” (Psalm 2:7), and speaks of the nations being given as His inheritance and the ends of the earth as His possession (Psalm 2:8). This points us toward the universal authority and kingship of Christ.
Therefore, the Psalm gives a solemn warning to kings and rulers: “Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth” (Psalm 2:10). Instead of resisting God, humanity is called to recognize His authority and respond with reverence.
The Psalm concludes with this powerful command: “Worship the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:11). One day, every person will acknowledge the authority of the King of kings, Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:10–11 declares that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
May Christ, the King of the universe, lead us to worship Him with reverence, humility, joy, and trembling. May our lives honor His name.
God bless you and have a blessed day. Love God and love people.
