This short, surprise book was born out of the cosmos, from a dangerously absurd place. After you read this, go and purchase Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns to learn about an important and dangerously absurd time in history. In the winter of 2023, I found myself blessed to be flowing in creativity, away from my childhood home and family, in a place I knew I wouldn’t stay forever. The poems here are about Oklahoma, and love, Guatemala and politics. They are about the perception of indigeneity that I brought with me, empathy, and the layers of community. They tell some stories about love and growth. Roughly a third of the poems are from several years back when I was trying to figure out my path forward. Roughly a third of them are from 2020-2022, when I was not certain I was ready to leave home, but I was being pulled to end and start again. And finally, roughly a third were written while living in Guatemala between July 2022 and December 2023. In this book, I played with length, with language, with spiritual ideation, and with timelines.
This book is a surprise because it should have come quickly ahead of its hood twin, Mics and Echoes, which sadly could not be carried to term or delivered. These books were conceived of different time frames and from different locations. They almost lived in the present together. Yet, here it is, in an absurd place on its own.
Najah hopes this book finds people of color, women, and writers all over the world. She hopes especially that it finds those who give a lot of thought to the physical place they belong.
