I stood barefoot on the wet sand, feeling the cold ocean breeze wrap around me like an old, familiar embrace. The waves reached for my feet, retreating as if whispering secrets only the sea could understand. The air smelled of salt and memories, of things lost and moments that could never be relived.
This was our place.
The place where we talked about everything and nothing at all. Where we laughed until our stomachs ached and let the wind carry our worries away. It was where he once held my hand, his fingers warm against mine, and told me, “No matter what happens, the ocean will always be here. And so will I, in every sunset.”
I never thought I would be standing here alone.
I closed my eyes, letting the rhythmic sound of the waves calm the storm inside me. If I stood still enough, I could almost hear his voice in the wind - soft, familiar, comforting. Almost feel his presence beside me, like a shadow that never faded. But when I opened my eyes, all I had was the endless horizon painted in hues of fire and longing.
The sun was setting, the sky ablaze with oranges, reds, and deep purples. It was the kind of beauty that stole your breath, the kind of moment that made time pause. And yet, as stunning as it was, my heart ached at the sight of it. Because he wasn’t here to see it with me.
I whispered his name, barely loud enough for the wind to carry it away. I wondered if, somehow, somewhere, he could hear me. If he was watching the same sunset from wherever he was.
A tear slipped down my cheek, and I let it fall. I didn’t wipe it away. Some things were meant to be felt.
The sun dipped lower, its golden light stretching across the waves, reaching for the shore like a final goodbye. And for just a moment, as the last warm rays kissed my skin, I swore I felt him.
Maybe he never truly left. Maybe he never would.
I took a deep breath, wiped my tears, and watched the sunset - just like I promised I would.
