Midsommar is a 2019 folk horror film written and directed by Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, and Will Poulter. It follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival that occurs once every 90 years, only to find themselves in the clutches of a Scandinavian neopagan cult.
A co-production between the United States and Sweden, the film was initially pitched to Aster as a straightforward slasher film set among Swedish cultists.[3] Aster devised a screenplay using elements of the concept, but made a deteriorating relationship the central conflict after he experienced a difficult breakup. The film was shot on location in Budapest in the summer and autumn of 2018.
Midsommar was theatrically released in the United States on July 3, 2019, by A24 and in Sweden on July 10, 2019, by Nordisk Film. The film grossed $47 million and received positive reviews from critics, with many praising Aster's direction and Pugh's performance.
Psychology student Dani Ardor is traumatized after her sister Terri kills herself and their parents by filling their home with carbon monoxide. The incident strains Dani's relationship with her emotionally distant boyfriend, cultural anthropology student Christian Hughes. She later learns that Christian and his friends Mark and Josh have been invited by their mutual Swedish friend Pelle to attend a midsummer celebration at Pelle's ancestral commune, the Hårga, in Hälsingland. The celebration occurs only once every 90 years and Josh, also an anthropology student, wants to write his thesis on it. Christian hid the trip from Dani, wanting to break up with her before leaving, but invites her along after she finds out about it, although he does not think she will actually come.
The group flies to Sweden and arrives at the commune, where they meet Simon and Connie, an English couple from London who were invited by Pelle's communal brother Ingemar. He offers the group psychedelic mushrooms, and Dani has hallucinations of Terri while under the drug's influence. Pelle gives Dani a drawing for her birthday, and pulls Christian aside to remind him when Dani unintentionally reveals that Christian forgot.
Tensions rise after the group witnesses an ättestupa, a tradition which sees two commune elders attempt to kill themselves by leaping from a cliff onto a rock. When one of the elders survives the fall, the commune members mimic his wails of agony and crush his skull with a mallet, while commune elder Siv attempts to calm Dani and her friends by explaining that this is a normal thing every member does when they reach the age of 72. The scene deeply disturbs the group of visitors, but they decide to stay long enough for Josh to finish his thesis.
Christian also decides to write his thesis on the Hårga, creating a rift between him and Josh, who accuses him of copying his idea. Dani attempts to leave, but Pelle convinces her to stay, explaining his own connection to the community after he was orphaned. While Simon and Connie decide to leave, an elder tells Connie that Simon has already left without her. Confused and suspicious, Connie decides to leave on her own; later, a woman's wail is heard in the distance. After Mark unwittingly urinates on an ancestral tree and incites the fury of the commune, he is lured away during dinner by Inga, who seemed to be interested in him. That night, Josh sneaks into the temple to take a photograph of the commune's sacred runic text, which an elder had previously forbidden him from doing. He sees a man wearing Mark's clothes and skinned face and is hit over the head from behind, after which his body is dragged away.
The next day, Dani is coerced into taking more psychedelic drugs and ends up winning a maypole dancing competition, subsequently being crowned May Queen. At the same time, Christian is given more drugs before being coerced into a sex ritual designed to impregnate one of the young females, Maja, while older naked female members watch and mimic Maja's moans. After discovering Christian and Maja having sex, Dani has a panic attack, during which the commune's younger women surround her and mimic her cries. After the ritual, Christian comes to his senses and tries to run away, but he instead discovers Josh's leg planted in a flowerbed and Simon's body turned into a blood eagle in a barn. Christian is then paralyzed by an elder.
The commune leaders explain to Dani that, to purge the commune of its evil, nine human sacrifices must be offered. The first four victims are outsiders (Mark, Josh, Simon, and Connie) lured to them by Pelle and Ingemar, while the next four victims must be commune members. As May Queen, Dani must choose either Christian or a local villager to be the ninth and final victim. She chooses to sacrifice Christian, who is stuffed into a disemboweled brown bear's body and placed in a small wooden temple alongside the other sacrifices. The temple is set on fire and the commune members celebrate by mimicking the screams and wails of those being burned alive. Dani initially sobs in horror, but gradually begins to smile.John Wick makes his way through Manhattan before he is labeled "excommunicado" for the unauthorized killing of High Table crime lord Santino D'Antonio on the grounds of the New York Continental Hotel.[N 1] At the New York Public Library, he retrieves a marker medallion and a crucifix. He is injured in a fight with a hitman named Ernest and seeks medical treatment from an underworld doctor, but his $14 million bounty activates before the doctor can finish. John finishes suturing himself and shoots the doctor in the stomach and shoulder to protect him from repercussions. He is quickly pursued by various gangs of assassins, whom he kills in an antiques store, in a stable, and in a chase while on horseback.
John meets with the "Director", the head of a secretive Ruska Roma crime syndicate. John presents the crucifix and demands safe passage to Casablanca. The Director reluctantly helps John as he was once one of them, a Belarusian-born protégé named Jardani Jovonovich. An Adjudicator of the High Table meets with Winston, the manager of the New York Continental, and the Bowery King, who manages a network of homeless criminals, to inform them that they both have seven days to resign from their positions. The Adjudicator hires Zero, an independent Japanese assassin, and has him stab the Director through both of her hands as penance for defying the High Table. In Casablanca, John meets Sofia, a former friend and manager of the Moroccan Continental. John presents the marker, which he obtained after helping her protect her daughter, and demands to be directed to the "Elder" - the only person above the High Table. Sofia reluctantly takes John to Berrada, her former boss, who tells John he may find the Elder by wandering through the desert until he cannot walk any longer. In exchange, Berrada asks for one of Sofia's dogs and when she refuses, he shoots the dog, which survives on account of its ballistic vest. Sofia tries to kill Berrada, but at John's warning she only wounds him. They fight their way out of the kasbah by killing scores of Berrada's henchmen and drive into the desert, where she leaves him.
Seven days later, the Adjudicator and Zero confront the Bowery King, who refuses to abdicate his position. In response, Zero's students slaughter his men while the King is scarred seven times with a wakizashi as penance. Meanwhile, John collapses in the desert and is brought to the Elder. John states that he wants to live to keep the memory of the love he once had with his late wife.[N 2] The Elder agrees to forgive John on the condition that he kill Winston and remain subservient to the High Table for the remainder of his life. John severs his ring finger and offers his wedding band to the Elder as an act of fealty. He returns to New York and is attacked by Zero and his students before reaching the protection of the Continental. Winston urges John not to die as the "Baba Yaga", but as a man who loved and was loved by his wife. The Adjudicator arrives, but Winston refuses to resign his position and John refuses to kill him, leading the Adjudicator to revoke the status of the Continental by deeming it "deconsecrated" and send both Zero and an army of heavily armed High Table enforcers to kill John and Winston. Winston provides John with weapons and the assistance of concierge Charon and his staff. After killing the enforcers, John is ambushed by Zero and his students, and John proceeds to kill all but two students who surrender with honor after being beaten. Zero confronts John and admits to being an admirer before the two fight, with John emerging as the victor after stabbing Zero through the chest and leaving him to die.
The Adjudicator agrees to a parley with Winston, who offers fealty to the High Table after pointing out that he has only "shown strength". John arrives and Winston shoots him repeatedly, causing him to fall off the roof. The Continental is consecrated again and Winston reassumes his manager position. The severely injured John is covertly delivered to an underground bunker in the sewers, where the Bowery King is waiting. He voices his anger with the High Table and asks John if he feels the same way, and John simply replies, "Yeah".
