How I discovered the universe by watching space videos on YouTube and how it all made me feel young again! 😎 🔭 🚀
YouTube’s algo sometimes shows me some surprising things that I end up getting sucked into without realizing it. A while back, I started getting these videos about space, galaxies, planets, and the universe that I found fascinating. Since I hit the like and subscribe button on YouTube, I started getting more and more, and I’ve mostly found them fascinating.
I have now developed a space addiction. I’ve learned a lot about our solar system and the unbelievably vast distances between our tiny planet and other places in our galaxy, and even Andromeda, the nearest galaxy to us that we will likely never reach. Each video brought a new revelation and touched on a different facet of space, space travel, science, distance, and many other interesting topics.
I thought I’d share some of my favorite videos, and if you like the content, you can click through and subscribe to the channel.
You should know that some of these are AI generated videos with an AI narrator. I like the sound of the AI narrator’s voice, and, given that it’s space content based on known science, I don’t really care much that some of it is AI-generated.

What I have learned from these videos
Now, I will share some of my thoughts after watching so many of these videos.
First, that last video about the moon is an eye-opener! Because of Apollo, I had assumed the moon would be mostly easy for us to colonize, especially with our newer technology. Well, I could not have been more wrong! 😳
It turns out that lunar dust, radiation, massive temperature swings, and other problems mean that the moon is the most dangerous environment we’ve ever tried to go into and survive in for any length of time.
The lunar dust alone is a huge problem since it gets into everything, and it also contains radiation from billions of years of cosmic ray bombardment of the moon. This happens because the moon has no magnetic shield like Earth. So cosmic rays batter the moon, and if you stood on the moon, you’d be getting radiation from the lunar dust and from above.
And the moon has a 14-day day/night cycle. Temperatures swing from around +225 degrees down to -225 or something like that. So all your equipment, housing, etc., must be built to withstand massive temperature swings. That includes the space suits worn by astronauts because the moon has no atmosphere.
Let me put it to you this way: Antarctica is considered one of the most hostile environments on earth, but it is nothing compared to the moon. There is air to breathe on Antarctica, and it is on Earth, so it is protected from radiation by Earth’s magnetic shield. There is no air on the moon and no protection from radiation whatsoever.
Anyway, give that moon video a watch, and you’ll learn more.
Another thing I’ve learned is the vast, almost unimaginable distances between us and Proxima Centauri (the nearest star) and Andromeda (the nearest galaxy). At the speeds of Voyager 1 or 2, it would take about 72,000 years to get to Proxima Centauri and about 4-5 billion years to get to Andromeda! In other words, it will be a looooooooong time before we get to either place unless some technological breakthrough happens that we cannot foresee right now.
Also, the video about us possibly being inside a giant black hole is also mind-bending. I’m not even going to try to comment on it, as my tiny undead brain had trouble processing that one! 😂
One of the other things that I enjoyed about these videos is how young they made me feel! When we are dealing with cosmic time, we are dealing with millions or billions or trillions of years. Well, as all of you know, I am undead, so I have been around since the dawn of mankind. I died so far back in the mists of human history that I cannot even remember when it happened. So, I usually feel old compared to living humans who are usually somewhere within their short life span of roughly 1 to 100 years old.
But even my age is nothing compared to the age of the planet, the solar system, the galaxy, and the observable universe! I feel like I was just born today when I weigh my undead age against the sheer time scale of the universe! It is an unusual feeling for me, as I am used to being the oldest one in the room, if you know what I mean. 😉
Look to the heavens and do not despair!
I will warn you also that these space videos have the potential to make you feel insignificant and less important than a form of bacteria. But that is the wrong way to perceive the heavens and all of their glory. The universe and everything in it was created so that you could be here.

You, my friend, were created in the image of God Almighty, and your human soul is precious! You are not an accident of the universe; you were the reason all of it was created. You were also created from it; you are a part of it, and it is a part of you, and always will be. The universe and you are one and the same.
So, when you look up at the heavens, remember that the universe itself needs you, because without you, there would be no one to appreciate its beauty and magnificence. You were meant to be here, to take it all in, and to be the most important and loved part of all of God’s heavenly glory!
