Meet McDuff, my senior cat that just turned 14 this September 2026. She now has Stage 1 Kidney Disease and supporting that has been difficult financially.
On August 13, there was a really bad wound next to her tail. We had her rushed to the vet, and it was decided that she'll be confined until it fully heals. She was discharged on August 30, but before we left we decided to get a full blood chem just to clear things up. And it's in those results that we learnt she is now in the beginnings of Kidney Disease.
Kidney problems is common in all cats. No matter how healthy a cat is, the first thing to go will likely be the kidney. If they get sick when they're young, the kidney will be very fragile. If they make it to seniority, the first thing that weakens is the kidney. And McDuff just turned 14 this September.
Two doctors have told me that this can be maintained, but is has to be maintained. I went straight into my emergency funds to buy what she needs; proper food, her medicine, a bed and one cat tree to make her more comfortable... It did quite a number on my finances, plus I had to call in from work that I'll be working remotely (this also docks my pay since I'm only allowed to work remotely for a total of two weeks for the year).
When she came back, she was really tired from the ordeal. She refused to eat, she's gotten bonier, and it's been difficult to keep an eye on her as I live on my own.
So I'm hoping to make up for how much I spent (and will likely have to respend).
