"DIVERGENT MIND: Thriving in a World That Wasn't Designed for You" by Jenara Nerenberg

(I finished this on January 26th.)

This book was oddly refreshing and a necessity since not enough research, which the book mentions, is done on neurodivergent women.

Are you a woman who has been told numerous times you're overreacting? You're too sensitive? First of all, they're gaslighting you so they don't have to listen to you, which is a common manipulation tactic used against women.

It's also a tactic used against those who are Autistic, ADHD, sensory sensitive, and so on, whether they're women or not. But mostly used on women, whether their diagnosis is known or not.

"Sensitive" has always been viewed as "weak", which is why women are too "hysterical to lead", like anger isn't an emotion, but that's a discussion for another day.

Divergent Mind validates the feelings of not only the highly sensitive, but also the women who are always being dismissed for their feelings. For their empathy.

(Yet, are also being told they need to be at home because they're the best caregivers... So, what it is? Are we valued for our empathy or not?
Good fucking grief...)

This book shows why our sensitivities need to be built into the system instead of dismissed so we can thrive in a world that wasn't designed for us.

My one criticism is their usage of the word "Asperger's". Assburger. And it was what the people she spoke to were diagnosed with...

JENARA NERENBERG is the founder of The Neurodiversity Project. A graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health and UC Berkeley, Nerenberg was selected as a "brave new idea" presenter by the Aspen Institute for her work on reframing mental differences. Her interviews have been published by Fast Company, New York magazine, Susan Cains Quiet Revolution, the Garrison Institute, the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center, and KQED, and Nerenberg is a frequent event host, workshop facilitator, and speaker for institutions including the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Park Day School, and elsewhere.
