Okay.
We're actually doing this.
Between sending my last email and now there are actual sentences sitting in my inbox. Actual people have left coffees.
And I'm sitting here with my beads thinking: "Oh. I actually have to make this thing." 😂
If you're just joining me, here's the very short version:
I'm trying to raise money for Law School.
Instead of simply asking people to donate, I'm creating a giant beaded tapestry called PIECES OF US.
People can leave me a coffee and send me UP TO 15 WORDS. I'll take those words and turn them into beads.
You give me the words. I'll make the art.
And eventually, all those little pieces are supposed to become one enormous tapestry.
The funny thing is that I don't actually know what it's going to look like yet.
I know the basic idea.
I know the kind of lettering I want.
I know roughly how I want to arrange everything.
But the actual tapestry?
WE'RE GOING TO DISCOVER THAT TOGETHER.
And I've already learned something I probably should have realised before starting:
People have A LOT to say. 😂
Which is why I've had to introduce the 15-word limit. And raise the coffee price to $10.
Because apparently when I say “send me a sentence,” some of you hear:
“Please write me a short memoir.”
And I cannot afford the beads for that especially if I need to have something left to actually save for law school.
So now:
$10 = up to 15 words.
If you have more to say, you can add another coffee and give your words more space.
And honestly, I think the limit makes the project more interesting.
Because if you only had 15 words to leave behind…
what would you choose?
Would you write something you've learned?
Something you hope for?
Something you love?
Something you wish you'd known earlier?
Something completely ridiculous?
Or maybe just something that makes you YOU?
That's the question I'm asking people now.
And I'm really curious to see what ends up on this tapestry.
Because somewhere between all these beads and all these sentences, I'm hoping we're going to create something that is much bigger than my Law School fundraiser.
"We shall create wonders that will make the world tremble"
And we're only just getting started.
