You stepped in, and there it was—the corner table where you had once shared endless nights of talk and laughter. Now, only a single chair was pulled out, as though waiting for someone who would never arrive. The air smelled faintly of coffee and candle wax, but the silence was heavier than the scent. You rested your hand on the table, tracing the grain of the wood as though it could conjure their presence back.
The music played softly from the old piano near the wall—notes stretched, hesitant, fragile. For a moment, you closed your eyes and almost heard their voice again, soft and close. And then it was gone, leaving only the hollow warmth of the gaslight, and the unbearable tenderness of an empty chair.
