Real Japanese words & phrases for drinking parties

Aug 08, 2024

Thank you for watching my birthday song cover video, Oni no Utage (鬼の宴)! This was my first try to sing a male singer's song!

https://youtu.be/ZkB5eyh7ffs?si=lu8ECyRMY3tt936e

The English lyrics were translated by the amazing professional translator, David Evelyn, who has worked on translations for Weekly Shonen Jump! (Including titles like Undead Unluck, Gokurakugai, Kaiju No. 8, and more). I truly appreciate his kindness in using his talent for my song cover. Thank you very much!

Since this song is about "banquet," I'll introduce some useful Japanese words for drinking parties/banquets. I heard that text data is more useful than PDFs for learners because it can be added to Anki or other apps, so I've included it here. If you find this helpful, please share this URL with your learning communities!

Oh by the way, you'll hear "お釈迦が蜘蛛の糸たらす 遅くはないわおいでなさい Gautama Buddha trickles down a spider's web It's not too late, so come on out" in the song. The part is based on "Kumo no Ito" (蜘蛛の糸)", a short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. In it, Buddha lowers a spider's thread into Hell to save a sinner who once spared a spider’s life. The thread symbolizes a chance at redemption, but it snaps when the sinner selfishly tries to climb it alone.
