MINDANAO, Philippines — A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck the southern region of Mindanao, leaving behind a trail of destruction, triggered landslides, and a rising humanitarian crisis.
The catastrophic quake, which originated offshore near Sarangani province along the active Cotabato Trench, shook the region violently, toppling infrastructure and burying entire communities under massive landslides. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the death toll has tragically climbed to 68, with dozens more still reported missing under the debris. Responders on the ground face agonizing challenges, as remote mountainous terrains have blocked heavy machinery, forcing rescue teams to dig through the rubble by hand.
Amidst the devastation, the focus is rapidly shifting toward the desperate survival of those who made it out alive. In the hardest-hit areas, groups of displaced children and local residents have taken to dusty roadsides, holding up makeshift cardboard signs that read, "We Need Help Food" and "We Need Help Food & Water." Their desperate plea highlights the acute shortage of basic necessities currently gripping the affected communities.
With more than 68,000 homes damaged or entirely flattened, tens of thousands of displaced families are now sleeping in open spaces, temporary makeshift shelters, or crowded evacuation centers.
