Über Midoralis
Hello, I am Robin, 37. Husband, father of two and the guy behind Midoralis. It is a one person studio where I make indie games, pixel art, apps and other projects.
Games have been part of my life pretty much from the start. The Atari came first. Pitfall, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and a few others I cannot even remember the names of anymore. Then came the NES. That is where I really got sucked into it. Super Mario Bros. and Zelda mostly, but also Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, and Contra. Kirby, Final Fantasy, Duck Hunt (really loved the light gun, but really hated the dog lol) and a whole lot more titles. After that the SNES took over my life for years. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI as well. Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter II, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, and many more.
Later my uncle gave me his own Sega Mega Drive (I was always playing on it when I visited) and that opened up a whole different side of gaming for me. Sonic of course, but also Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Rambo, Comix Zone, and Gunstar Heroes. The CD-i showed up briefly after my dad won one in some prize draw, with titles like Myst, Litil Divil, and the weird Zelda and Link ones lol. Weird little machine but I loved it at the time (the controller not so much ha). Then the PlayStations came along, all three of them eventually. Final Fantasy 1 through 10. Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tekken, Symphony of the Night, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, and an endless list. Years and years of memories from those.
Our first PC came home with my dad from work. One of the old office machines he was allowed to take home. Later it got replaced by a slightly better one. With dial up internet and an hour of playtime a day I was completely sold on PC gaming from then on. Commander Keen was an early favourite. Prince of Persia, Jazz Jackrabbit, Doom, and Worms got a lot of time too. Then came the strategy era for me. Red Alert, StarCraft, Age of Empires, Commandos, The Settlers, and Heroes of Might and Magic III. I'd always try to squeeze ten extra minutes out of my dad when a mission was almost done. Sometimes that worked. Mostly it did not. Me and my friends would also swap consoles and cartridges around so everyone got to play stuff they could not afford themselves. On the handheld side it was mostly Pokémon, but also Fire Emblem, Medabots, and Final Fantasy. Those really hooked me on RPGs for good.
That carried into Skyrim, Oblivion, Minecraft, Path of Exile, Diablo II, and a long run of old school MMORPGs (RuneScape, WoW, PristonTale, Flyff, RF Online, and many more). Pixel art is the style that stuck with me the most though. Both playing it and making it is what I enjoy doing. Somewhere along the way my interest moved from just playing games to figuring out how they actually work and how they are created. Midoralis is where that goes next. The goal is pretty simple. I want to make games that give other people the same joy these gave me.
Outside of game dev our biggest collective dream as a family is to emigrate to Sweden. The Netherlands has been good to us but life here is fast and crowded and we keep finding ourselves looking for something slower and closer to nature. Sweden just fits that for us (and the houses are affordable!). The forests, the lakes, the quiet. Every time we visit it gets a bit harder to come home again. The plan eventually is a piece of land out there, my wife running a small bed and breakfast and me making games full time from a home office in between the trees and amazing nature.
