Introduce yourself; who are you and what types of books do you write?

I am Yewande Akinse, a poet whose heart beats in rhythm with the pulse of the world. My journey through the realm of poetry is not merely a pursuit of words, but a profound exploration of the human experience, an endeavor to capture the fleeting moments of beauty, sorrow, and resilience that define our existence.

In my work, I seek to evoke emotion and provoke thought, inviting readers to engage with their own narratives while celebrating the shared tapestry of humanity. Poetry, for me, is a sacred act, a devotion to the art of connection, a means of transcending the ordinary, and a way to honor the stories that linger in the silence between breaths. It is a journey of discovery, where each line becomes a bridge to understanding, and every verse a testament to the enduring power of language to heal, inspire, and transform.

What are your books about?

My books are a tapestry woven from the threads of experience, emotion, and the intricate dance of human connection. Each collection serves as a vessel for exploring the depths of identity, resilience, and the rich cultural heritage that shapes our lives.

Voices: A Collection of Poems that Tell Stories (2016) is a homage to the myriad narratives that often go unheard. It captures the essence of shared experiences, illuminating the beauty and complexity of our collective journey. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt language, I invite readers to step into the lives of others, fostering empathy and understanding in a world that often feels fragmented.

In “A Tale of Being, of Green and of Ing”, I delve into the themes of growth and transformation, exploring the interplay between nature and the human spirit. This collection reflects my belief in the interconnectedness of all living things, celebrating the beauty of existence and the lessons we learn from the world around us.

Most recently, “The Rise and Fall of Rhymes and Rhythms” is a heartfelt exploration of childhood, crafted specifically for young readers. Comprising 100 poems, this collection serves as a love letter to my daughter, imparting essential life lessons through playful language and rhythmic structure. Each poem is a gentle reminder of the virtues of kindness, courage, and self-discovery, inviting children to engage with their emotions and the world around them.

Through my work, I strive to evoke emotion and provoke thought, creating a space where readers can reflect on their own stories while recognizing the shared humanity that binds us all. My poetry is a celebration of life in all its forms and a testament to the enduring power of words to inspire, heal, and connect us across the vast expanse of our shared existence.

What was the inspiration behind writing your first book?

The inspiration behind writing my first book, Voices: A Collection of Poems that Tell Stories, emerged from a deep-seated desire to illuminate the often-overlooked narratives that shape our collective experience. As I navigated my own journey of self-discovery, I became acutely aware of the power of storytelling to foster empathy and understanding.

Each poem in this collection is a reflection of the diverse voices I encountered, friends, family, and strangers whose stories resonated with me in profound ways. I was inspired by the richness of their experiences, the struggles they faced, and the triumphs they celebrated. I sought to capture these moments, weaving them into verses that honor their humanity and complexity.

Writing this book was also a personal exploration of my own identity and heritage. It became a means of grappling with my place in the world, a way to articulate the emotions and thoughts that often felt too vast to contain. The act of writing transformed into a cathartic journey, allowing me to confront my fears, celebrate my roots, and ultimately share my truth.

In essence, Voices is not just a collection of poems; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the interconnectedness of our stories. It reflects my belief that every voice matters, and through poetry, we can create a tapestry of understanding that binds us together in our shared humanity.

What did you learn while writing your second book?

While writing my second book, a collection of 63 poems that traverses the historical, spiritual, and natural realms of existence, I learned the profound beauty of interconnectedness. Each poem became a thread in a larger tapestry, weaving together the physical and spiritual dimensions of being, the rich heritage of my home country Nigeria, and the self-revolving forces of nature.

In the first part, I explored the essence of being, both in its tangible forms and ethereal connotations. I discovered that existence is a dance of light and shadow, a delicate balance between the seen and the unseen. This exploration taught me to embrace the duality of life, to find grace in vulnerability, and to honor the sacredness of every moment.

The second part, focused on Nigeria, was a journey into the heart of my heritage. I delved into the vibrant culture, the echoes of history, and the resilience of a people who have weathered storms yet continue to rise. Through this discourse, I learned the importance of storytelling as a means of preserving our collective memory, celebrating our triumphs, and acknowledging our struggles.

In the final section, I turned my gaze to the natural world, reflecting on the self-revolving forces that shape our environment. I found solace in the rhythms of nature, the changing seasons, the cycles of life and death, and the interconnectedness of all living things. This exploration deepened my appreciation for the earth and its wisdom, reminding me that we are all part of a greater whole.

Ultimately, this writing journey taught me that poetry is a vessel for connection, a means of bridging the gaps between our individual experiences and the collective human story. Through these verses, I aspire to invite readers into a shared space of reflection, wonder, and reverence for the beauty that surrounds us, urging them to embrace their own journeys with open hearts.

What is the most rewarding part of being an author?

The most rewarding part of being an author lies in the profound connections forged through the written word. Each time a reader engages with my work, it feels as though a bridge is built between our experiences, transcending time and space. The knowledge that my words can evoke emotions, provoke thought, or inspire change is a deeply humbling and fulfilling aspect of this journey.

There is an unparalleled joy in witnessing the impact of my stories on others, whether it’s a child discovering the magic of poetry for the first time or an adult finding solace in verses that resonate with their own struggles. These moments remind me that literature is not merely an individual pursuit; it is a communal experience that fosters empathy and understanding.

Additionally, the act of creation itself is a rewarding endeavor. The process of crafting a poem or a narrative allows me to explore the depths of my own thoughts and emotions, providing a sense of clarity and purpose. Writing becomes a form of self-discovery, a way to articulate the complexities of life and to share my unique perspective with the world.

Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of being an author is the opportunity to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of readers, to contribute to the rich tapestry of human experience, and to celebrate the transformative power of storytelling. It is a privilege to be part of this timeless tradition, and I am grateful for every moment spent in the company of words.

What is the hardest part of being an author for you?

The hardest part of being an author lies in the delicate dance between vulnerability and exposure. Each time I put pen to paper, I am compelled to lay bare my innermost thoughts and emotions, to invite readers into the sanctum of my soul. This act of sharing is both a profound privilege and a daunting challenge, as it requires me to confront my fears and insecurities head-on.

The weight of self-doubt often looms large, whispering insidious questions: Will my words resonate? Will they be understood? The fear of misinterpretation or rejection can be paralyzing, casting shadows over the creative process. Yet, it is precisely this vulnerability that gives my work its depth and authenticity. I grapple with the tension between the desire for connection and the fear of being misunderstood.

Moreover, the solitude of writing life can be isolating. While the act of creation is deeply personal, it often unfolds in silence, away from the world. This solitude can lead to moments of introspection that are both enlightening and overwhelming, as I navigate the complexities of my thoughts and the weight of my responsibilities as a storyteller.

Ultimately, the hardest part of being an author is embracing this vulnerability while remaining steadfast in my commitment to truth. It is a journey fraught with challenges, yet it is also one that offers the potential for profound connection and understanding. In the end, I write not only to express my own truths but to illuminate the shared human experience, reminding us all of the beauty and fragility of our existence.

What is your current writing project?

My current writing project is my recently published collection of poems titled “The Rise and Fall of Rhymes and Rhythms”. This work is a heartfelt exploration crafted specifically for children, consisting of 100 poems that aim to impart essential life lessons through engaging and accessible language.

In this collection, I delve into themes such as kindness, resilience, curiosity, and self-discovery, all presented in a playful and rhythmic style. Each poem is structured as a dizain, featuring ten lines with a defined rhyme scheme, which not only enhances the musicality of the verses but also makes the lessons memorable for young readers.

The inspiration for “The Rise and Fall of Rhymes and Rhythms” stems from my deep love for my daughter and my desire to provide her with guidance as she navigates the complexities of growing up. Through vivid imagery and relatable scenarios, I hope to spark curiosity and foster empathy, encouraging children to explore their emotions and the world around them.

As I promote this collection, I am excited to engage with educators, parents, and young readers, sharing the joy of poetry and its potential to inspire and connect. This project represents not just my artistic expression but also my commitment to nurturing the next generation through the transformative power of words.

What is the best writing advice you’ve ever received?

The best writing advice I’ve ever received came from a seasoned poet who once said, “Write not to impress, but to express.” This simple yet profound statement shifted my perspective on the craft of writing. It reminded me that the essence of poetry lies in authenticity and vulnerability, rather than in the pursuit of accolades or validation.

This advice encouraged me to delve deeper into my own experiences and emotions, to embrace the rawness of my thoughts without the fear of judgment. It taught me that true connection with readers arises from honesty, when I allow my voice to shine through, unfiltered and genuine.

By focusing on expression rather than impression, I learned to trust my instincts and to write from the heart. This approach has not only enriched my poetry but has also fostered a sense of freedom in my creative process. It serves as a constant reminder that the most impactful writing resonates because it reflects the truth of our shared humanity, inviting others to find their own reflections within the words.
