Hey there — I’m the human behind the Substack page: The Complete Works of Ernie Pyle.
My job? It starts with transcribing ancient microfiche scans. I decode the blurred output of a typewriter from 90 years ago, then send Ernie’s words into the 21st century. Considering he wrote 1,200 words a day, six days a week for 10 years straight, it is no small task. Each column takes about 30 minutes to transcribe, edit, and post. That is, assuming the jpeg doesn’t look like it was scanned by a drunk raccoon. Which sometimes it does.
Sometimes, it takes a drunk raccoon. Just sayin'.
All subscriber funds go straight to the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation. But if you want to toss a couple bucks my way for coffee (or optometrist bills) I'd be forever grateful. It will help keep the volunteer at the keyboard upright, alert, and typo-free...sometimes. Hey, I'm working on it!
Support history. Support coffee. Support the strange hobby that somehow became a mission. Thanks!
