In the heights is one of my favorite contemporary musicals. Coming from a mixed Filipino and Mexican background, I grew up feeling very close to my heritage and family. The story inside of In The Heights shows Nina who is singing the song sharing her feelings of insecurity around her going to college and not feeling understood or like she belongs in a primarily affluent Caucasian university setting. Nina's father has sold part of his business to help put Nina through college so that she can continue her studies. She continues to feel that she doesn't belong and that she has let the entire community down due to her not performing the highest academically and socially feeling isolated.
