Does Poetry Matter?

Poetry is one of the oldest forms of both art and communication.  In fact, poetry predates written language, and played a crucial role in the survival of our species.  It was how important information was first memorized and passed on. As long as humans have tried to understand themselves and the world, they have turned to poetry.  With its brevity, elegance, beauty, and power, poetry comforts us, nourishes our souls, and allows our hearts to sing and to soar.  It is language elevated and liberated, offering a unique freedom and dynamism of expression.  Despite all the technological advances and methods of communication we have today, poetry remains as relevant today as it has ever been.

In our most intimate moments as well as in times of great tragedy, it is poetry we turn to.  Whether written, read, or heard, this goddess of the arts, like a loving mother, comforts us and reminds us that we are not alone, and that the human spirit is unbreakable.  More than anything else, poetry holds humanity together, transcending language, politics, borders, and beliefs, and it is no exaggeration to say that without poetry, this world and the human experience would be very different.

That’s why poetry still and always will matter.
