Tarokka

May 11, 2025

I just released tarokka.app, an online tool that simulates the Tarokka card reading from Dungeons & Dragons: Curse of Strahd. In the campaign, the Tarokka deck is used by a fortune teller to introduce randomized elements that enhance replayability.

The app supports both DM and spectator views to help preserve mystery and control narrative information. DMs can further refine what players see using an in-app settings modal. It’s built with React and Next.js, uses a custom Socket.IO server for real-time updates, and is styled with Tailwind CSS and Lucide icons.

From browsing the Curse of Strahd subreddit, it seems many DMs like to stack the deck to avoid less engaging outcomes. As a next step, I’m considering a feature that allows DMs to “reroll” cards until they find results they like. Another idea is to let DMs manually select cards—useful for those who perform a physical reading but want to share the outcome online.
