(English at the end)

Sep 02, 2025

The bad news I don’t know how to share.

25 days ago was the last time I gave an update about my mom’s health through this platform. The next steps were supposed to be “simple”: motor stimulation (getting my mom to move more), better nutrition, and a follow-up MRI to take to the doctor at the next appointment, so we could see how the valve was working.

The surgery went wrong.

The moment I received the MRI results and “interpreted” them with artificial intelligence, I panicked. The valve is not in the right position. I didn’t know the consequences of what I was reading or exactly what it meant, but it sounded devastating. It was like reading: “the clock against her keeps ticking at the same speed.”

We waited for the doctor’s appointment, and he confirmed that the catheter is outside the ventricle and that a second surgery is necessary. He said he would not charge medical fees, and that only the outpatient costs needed to be covered (no overnight hospitalization this time like the first one), and that the same valve would be used.

I still don’t fully understand the process, because the pain is so overwhelming that I can’t digest the message I later received from the doctor’s assistant: quite the opposite of what he said. I’ll leave in this update the messages I received. The second clinical estimate (ironically more expensive than the first one) also added that I should be prepared to buy another valve in case it’s needed.

In the first surgery, these amounts were divided into three items:

  1. Medical Fees (USD 2,700.00)

  2. Clinic (USD 688.00)

  3. Valve (USD 550.00)

Not including previous and later expenses (tests, transportation, supplies).

Even though I paid everything, and this fundraising campaign almost entirely covered it all, I don’t understand how now—even though the doctor won’t charge fees—the costs are still similar to the first surgery:

  1. Medical Expenses (USD 1,000.00). I don’t know what this is or what it refers to. I don’t have a medical report breaking down this amount, which seems a bit absurd considering that in the first surgery this item didn’t even exist.

  2. Outpatient Clinic (USD 660.00). Yes, the difference between an “about 30-minute” outpatient procedure and one with hospitalization included is only 28 dollars; and not only does that sound unreasonable, but also highly illogical and disproportionate.

  3. New Valve (USD 550.00). Same price as the previous one, which I am quite convinced is being distributed by the doctor’s assistant.

Maybe I share and speak about everything in a very emotional and resentful tone, but I don’t know how else to feel. I have my questions, my doubts, and a lot of frustration. Why wasn’t the cost of the first surgery acknowledged or considered in order to “fix” this damage that was caused? Who is responsible? Medical expenses for what? Why don’t I have a detailed medical report with everything that happened and what is needed? It seems like the approach is just to have a verbal consultation, with nothing in writing, everything paid on the spot, nothing accountable, nothing claimed, no warranty considered.

I feel like everything I’ve done has been a waste of time, putting my mom’s life in the hands of people without empathy. It is very painful to deal with all this and try to update you. I don’t think I’m the best at doing so, but I hope to record a video and continue the fundraising campaign. Clearly, every day the money stretches less, and it is frustrating to carry all of this.

I can’t upload the doctor’s video here because I need to put it on YouTube, but I will find a way to share it. I can share the study and the estimates, and if anyone knows what else I can do, please write to me on Instagram or WhatsApp.

Thank you to those who have been part of this and to those who still want to keep contributing via.
