Ugly
Merely scratching the surface
She looks away
She looks again
Scratches some more
Looks away
Scratches a little more
With every scratch
Heart racing
Beads of sweat
Blood pumps, ferocious
Tears vacate towards her pool of vulnerable
She scratches some more
Peeks through the surface
As it begins to surface away
Intrigued
Scratches some more
Scared
Scratches some more
Looks away
Looks again
Looks inwards
Looks outwards
Looks above
Eventually,
underneath
Ugly
She had never felt ugly like this before
Never had the chance to be ugly
Never looked ugly hard in the face
Never shook ugly’s hand
Never embraced ugly
Never told ugly that it mattered too
Never took ugly out with her to dance
Never brought ugly to bed
Never bought ugly along for the fun
Never showed ugly to the world
Or the world, ugly
And this is when it got interesting,
Why?
Because ugly was her truth
Beneath her
Laying naked, under the shiny surface
Ugly was in her beauty
And beauty was in her ugly
Ugly longed and had to be loved
Only then
Could she be fully,
Authentically,
Perfectly
Beautifully
Living.
