When Even Microsoft Needs AWS

When Even Microsoft Needs AWS

Jun 16, 2026

Microsoft is reportedly using AWS to help handle GitHub's AI-driven infrastructure demand.

Think about that for a second.

Microsoft owns GitHub.

Microsoft owns Azure.

AWS is Azure's biggest competitor.

Yet the explosion of AI-generated code and coding agents has reportedly pushed GitHub's infrastructure demand so high that Microsoft is adopting a temporary multi-cloud strategy. GitHub's code activity is projected to jump dramatically as AI tools generate and review code at unprecedented scale.

This is one of the clearest signs that AI isn't just changing how developers write software.

It's changing the economics of developer platforms themselves.

For years, cloud providers competed on features, pricing, and ecosystem lock-in.

Now they're competing on who can supply enough compute to power billions of AI-assisted coding actions.

The most interesting part?

The bottleneck is no longer developer productivity.

The bottleneck is infrastructure capacity.

We're entering an era where AI can generate software faster than cloud platforms can scale to support it.

That's a problem nobody was discussing a few years ago.
