Steps for Completing Task Three

Most of the handbooks follow the same basic steps for Task 3. The ones that have a notable difference are SPED, Early Childhood, and PE.

I highly recommend my Ultimate Guide to Task Three if you haven't already purchased the Ultimate Guide to Tasks 1, 2, 3. You'll get step by step directions from beginning to end along with sample responses, checklists, and links to tutorials. Check out all of the Task 3 Resources here.

  1. View this video to help you understand the big picture about Task Three.

  2. Choose an assessment and create evaluation criteria.

  3. Collect and analyze all students' work from the selected assessment and identify patterns of learning within and across learners in the class. Need help? View this.

  4. Create a graph or chart to display the whole class analysis. This will be used in prompt 1b. This video is gives excellent directions for making the graphs.

  5. Select 3 student work samples as evidence of the patterns of learning in the class. These 3 students will be your focus students. These works samples with be Part A. You will submit 3 files - one for each focus student. Find out about work samples and feedback here.

Finding your focus students is an important part of the process. Please be prepared!

  6. Write or give feedback for the work samples for the 3 focus students in written, audio, or video form. If your feedback was written on work samples then you do not have to submit these files. If your students are non-readers then you MUST video record your feedback.

Check out this blog on giving feedback.

  7. Begin your commentary.

My "How to Write" series has been very successful in helping 100s of people write their commentaries. You can have your own copy of the PowerPoint to use for support. It can be purchased in my store here.

  8. When writing your commentary, you will summarize the learning of the whole class, referencing to your graph and the work samples from the 3 focus students to illustrate patterns that you found. This video will help you understand what to write for Prompt 1.

  9. In prompt 2 of the commentary, you will write about the feedback that you gave students. View this video to get more of an understanding of Prompt 2.

  10. In prompt 3, you will analyze evidence of students’ language use from a possible three sources. Viewing this video will help you understand what you need to do. This video will help you understand what to write.

    • the video clips from Instruction Task 2, and/or

    • an additional video clip of one or more students using language within the learning segment, and/or

    • the student work samples from Assessment Task 3. If you submit a separate language use file, it will go into Part B.

  11. In the final prompt, you will plan for next steps. View this video for help in answering that last prompt.

It's time to check all of your work! Using my Ultimate Guide to the Evidence Chart will keep you from getting condition codes. It's only $9.99 and it is a good investment!! Watch the video below for a preview.
