I was born in the U.S., but I’ve lived in Oaxaca, Mexico for over 26 years. I’ve always been drawn to the mystery, intelligence, and forgotten brilliance of ancient civilizations. That curiosity eventually collided with a frustrating truth: Monte Albán, one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Mesoamerica, a 45 minute drive from where I live, is being neglected.
Despite its global significance, the Mexican government has done surprisingly little to promote it or present it with the depth and clarity it deserves. The official websites are bare-boned, buerocratic and hard to read. On-site information is minimal. Tourists come and go with no idea what they’re walking on. That didn’t sit right with me.
So I started building what I wish existed, a platform with real information and tools to help people actually understand and truly experience Monte Albán, not just take pictures of it.
This has become a personal side mission: to research, write, narrate, design, and share everything I can to make your experience at Monte Albán richer, clearer, and more meaningful. I’m not backed by a university or a cultural institution. I’m just one guy working late nights, often hunched over a keyboard with a half-finished coffee, trying to fill a gap no one else seems interested in filling. I lucked out being able to register the domain montealbanoaxaca.com and I intend to use it.
Every guide, map, and audio tour is created to give travelers like you tools that should already exist.
If this project helps you, saves you time, money, or makes your visit unforgettable, you can support it by purchasing the full self-guided audio tour for just $10 USD. This is a fraction of the cost of on-site guides and tour operators which can be between $29 and $35 USD per person (at least). And while the free self-guided audio tour, available on the website, includes 5 major stops, the full tour includes all 16 stops, packed with real context, stories, tips, and perspectives you won’t get on-site, (and certainly not from a brochure or a government website).
If you believe in what I’m doing and want to help keep it going, consider bumping up your support to $25, $50, or more. Every cent helps keep the site alive, the content growing, and the mission on track.
Thanks for being here 😁.
