YOU NEVER NEEDED THE POOL
Recognizing the Answer Beyond the Expected Pathway
Sometimes the greatest obstacle is not the absence of an answer.
It is our attachment to a specific pathway.
Many of us have stood beside our own versions of the pool.
Waiting.
Watching.
Hoping.
Believing that if the right conditions align, the right opportunity arrives, the right person appears, or the right moment comes, then life can finally move forward.
Yet one of the most powerful moments in scripture reveals something entirely different.
The man at the Pool of Bethesda had spent years focused on a particular process. He believed healing would come through a specific sequence of events. His attention had become organized around a pathway rather than a possibility.
Then everything changed.
Jesus did not help him into the pool.
Jesus questioned the framework.
"Do you want to be made well?"
In that moment, the conversation shifted away from circumstances and toward recognition.
The answer was never limited to the route he had imagined.
The answer was standing beside the pool.
How often do we do the same thing?
We become convinced that a specific job, opportunity, relationship, platform, strategy, timeline, event, or circumstance is required for progress.
We believe movement can only occur through a particular door.
We become attached to the expected pathway.
Meanwhile, life may already be answering.
Not necessarily through the route we anticipated.
Not necessarily through the form we preferred.
But through what is already present.
Recently, I experienced a simple reminder of this truth.
I was looking for a specific bottle of ketchup. I knew there was a larger bottle available, but I wanted the smaller one. After searching, I realized something else was already present.
Two ketchup packets from a recent takeout order.
The moment did not require the bottle.
The moment required ketchup.
The answer was already available.
Not in the expected format.
But available nonetheless.
That small experience became a powerful reminder.
Often what feels missing is not the answer.
It is the form we expected the answer to take.
Nothing is missing.
Everything is circulating.
Life is constantly responding.
The question becomes:
Where is life already answering?
Where have we mistaken a pathway for the answer itself?
Where have we become so focused on the pool that we have overlooked what is already present?
The invitation is not to abandon wisdom, preparation, or participation.
The invitation is to recognize that answers often arrive through unexpected pathways.
The answer may not look like the route you imagined.
It may not arrive through the sequence you planned.
It may not resemble the breakthrough you anticipated.
Yet it may already be standing beside the pool.
Perhaps the greatest shift is not finding a new answer.
Perhaps it is recognizing the one already present.
Nothing is missing.
Life is answering.
The pool was never the point.
