In the third step of my sermon preparation system, I take notes, divided into three categories: Observation, Interpretation, and Application.
During the Observation stage, I focus on what the text says. I examine figures of speech, repetitive words, and conjunctions. I pose questions to the text, such as who the author is, who they are addressing, and the context within which they are speaking. This stage involves a thorough examination to fully understand the text's message.
In the Interpretation stage, I aim to understand the text's meaning. This involves considering the context and genre of the book. I utilize study tools such as a Study Bible, Word study, and Bible Dictionary. I strive to understand the historical and geographical context of the Ancient world.
In the Application stage, I consider how the text applies to my local church context. I ponder how to convey the truth of the word in a way that benefits the congregation. I consider how to communicate these timeless truths to those entrusted to my care.
I hope you find this process as enlightening as I do.
