Two words that mean a lot

Two words that mean a lot

Ever noticed how we often breeze past opportunities to pause and say two simple words: Thank you?

Sometimes, I wonder if we've somehow forgotten the art of saying thanks, of genuinely appreciating the efforts others put in, no matter how small. I mean, think about it. When was the last time you uttered a heartfelt thank you to someone outside your immediate circle?

Now, before you think I'm preaching from some high horse, let me share a little something. Every time I hop off the bus – yup, even through the back door – I make it a point to say "thank you". And it’s not about making a show of it or expecting applause for it, but you know what? Rarely do I hear anyone else doing the same thing. And I can't help but ask myself, why?

Imagine this for a second

What if our world ran on the currency of gratitude? God knows we need it right now. Picture a day where, instead of exchanging bills and coins, we exchanged genuine appreciation. Where every service, every kind act, every gesture was met with heartfelt thanks. Doesn't that sound wonderful?

But wait – why does this idea sound so novel or even far-fetched? Perhaps it's because, along the way, we’ve grown a bit too comfortable. We walk around with this preconceived notion that things should just happen for us.

Do we think we're entitled to the gestures and services provided by others without acknowledging them?

The world and societies need this right now

Many people are currently facing hardships, whether it's financial stress, Indigenous communities grappling with the aftermath of the NO vote winning the referendum, strained family dynamics, overseas conflicts, and the list goes on.

While it's important to acknowledge that the words 'thanks' won't magically solve these issues, expressing gratitude can make people feel valued. If all of us could do it more often, it could create a ripple effect of gratitude. Here are some of the benefits of saying 'thanks':

  1. Boosts Happiness: Expressing gratitude releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure. By thanking someone, we essentially give ourselves a free dose of happiness!

  2. Strengthens Bonds: Gratitude strengthens our relationships. When people feel appreciated, they are more likely to connect with you.

  3. Elevates Our Perspective: By recognizing the good in others, we begin to see the world through a lens of positivity and hope.

Just imagine the change we could bring, the positive vibes we could spread, and the smiles we could share with just those two words.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept

Now, I've got a little challenge for you. Today, I want you to reach out to three people – could be a family member, a friend, or even the barista who brews your daily coffee. Text, call, or walk right up to them and say thanks. Express that you appreciate who they are and what they do.

Why? Because gratitude, my friend, is contagious. And you have the power to set off that chain reaction.

So, let me ask you this: Are you up for spreading a little magic today? After all, isn’t it about time we brought back the genuine art of saying "Thank you"?

Let's make it happen. ✨🙏
