The Green Check: A 10-Second Move for the Shame Spiral

Oct 12, 2026

imageShame is quick. One awkward moment, and within a few seconds your brain has grabbed a headline: "See? This is going to keep happening." That headline is what Chapter 3 calls the start of the shame loop, and the Green Check is the tool I built to answer it.

What a Green Check is

It's a short statement that's true, calm, and specific to the story you're telling yourself. It's not positive thinking, and it doesn't pretend nothing happened. It just removes the verdict.

The book gives examples matched to the common stories. If your story is "I'm broken," a Green Check might be: "My body is reacting to stress, and stress can shift." If it's "I ruined it," try: "One moment doesn't equal the whole night." If it's "She's judging me," try: "I don't know what she's thinking. I can choose my next action." And for "this always happens": "This happened before, but it isn't a prophecy."

The exact words matter less than the job. A good Green Check drops the self-attack, swaps certainty for a bit of flexibility, and points you toward what you can do next.

The timing rule

Use it within about 10 seconds of the shame thought landing. If you wait until later, you're editing the replay instead of interrupting the loop while it runs. Ten seconds is short enough that you can't build a long argument, which is the point. You're not debating with yourself.

I also pair it with something physical. Say the line in your head while you soften your jaw and drop your shoulders. Shame is emotional and physical at once, and a little release in the body tells your nervous system it isn't a crisis.

What it won't do

It won't make shame disappear for good, and I'd distrust any book that said it would. The goal in Chapter 3 is a shorter leash. Shame will still show up. You're teaching your system that it doesn't get to drive.

Pick one story that sounds most like you and write the Green Check you'd actually believe. If it sounds fake when you read it aloud, you won't use it under pressure, so make it plainer.

The book has the full shame loop breakdown and the five-step plan for when shame comes back. It's $39, an instant download, in my Shop.
