Why "It'll Sort Itself Out" Is a Reasonable-Sounding But Usually Wrong Bet
Performance anxiety runs on a self-reinforcing loop, covered in Chapter 3. One difficult experience gets tagged as a threat. The next similar situation triggers an earlier, stronger threat response because of that tag. That response makes the next experience more likely to be difficult too, which reinforces the tag further. Without something actively interrupting that loop, it tends to hold steady or get stronger over time, not fade quietly on its own.
Why "A New Partner Will Fix It" Often Doesn't Play Out
New partners sometimes genuinely do reduce anxiety temporarily, lower history, lower expectation, less established pattern. But the underlying mechanism, spectatoring, the proof loop, the threat association with evaluation, comes with you into the new relationship. It often resurfaces once the stakes start to feel real again, which for a lot of men happens sooner than expected.
Why "Once Life Calms Down" Rarely Solves It Either
General stress can absolutely worsen the pattern, covered in the book too, but reducing external stress doesn't automatically undo a learned threat association that's specific to intimate situations. The two are related but distinct, and fixing one doesn't automatically fix the other.
What Actually Interrupts the Loop
Deliberate intervention. Understanding the mechanism, practicing regulation and cognitive tools, eventually addressing communication. Not more time, not a change in circumstances, actual work on the actual pattern.
