Flights don’t go to Ukraine currently, so the only way over the border is by bus or train. I flew to Krakow, took a bus to Lviv, took a train to Kyiv, then one last train to Kharkiv. The journey took 3 days.
My overnight in Lviv had me staying in a capsule hotel, equipped with broken showers, 3 feet floor to ceiling pods, and mood lighting. Lviv was a beautiful city though. If anyone is interested in volunteering in Ukraine, it is quite safe there, lots of international volunteers everywhere, and very affordable.
When I finally made it to Kharkiv, I was exhausted and ready to nap, but was woken up regularly by air raid sirens. We experience sirens everyday multiple times a day. Long range scanners pick up ballistics and sound warnings in all cities on their trajectory. Simply because Kharkiv is so close to the Russian border, we fall under the trajectory of most attacks.
