The team of Localinsa captures the essence of life in the community, embodying the meaning of being the "inhabitants" and "protagonists" of their area. We record the stories of each neighborhood, with its special memories and places, through the everyday lives of its residents, documented in powerful texts and images.
We capture the images of residents, not necessarily the "hotspots" of the cities. We do this because local residents who can share the stories of how it have been like living in the neighborhood, in our perspective, are true important figures of the local communities.
In late 2023, upon request from the Mokpo Culture City Center, we conducted research on exclusive regional resources of Mokpo, the harbor city of South Korea in context of its ecological-cultural ecosystem and lifestyle. In the journey, we got to meet these lovely people of Dali-do(Dali Island) of Mokpo.
Despite being the largest island among the islands in Mokpo, Yuin Island, even during its prime, was home to up to 500 residents. Now, fewer than 100 residents live on the island. Among them, about 70% are elderly people over the age of 75. More than half of the island's population is in their 80s or 90s. Most of the elderly were born and raised on the island. Apart from occasionally buying necessities, they have rarely had the opportunity to experience any cultural or artistic programs outside the island.
We want to take pictures of these village people living in the island, in harmony with beautiful nature and landscape exclusive to the Dali Island: the unique pace of life and ecosystem of this harbor city's small island village, its playfulness, beautiful nature, and gourmet food.
These photographs we take will be valuable for decades and centuries to come.
