Survival Techniques, Part 7: The Information Diet

The information diet technique is tangential to that of gray rock, in that it enables you to protect your peace in a quiet, stealthy, nearly indiscernible way.

Gray rock means you respond to questions or comments from your abuser by making yourself as interesting as...well...a gray rock. Answers like, "OK," "I'm fine," or an offhand "Hmmm," are a great shield against your abuser's prying; they give the abuser absolutely no ammunition with which to attack you.

This is also how the information diet works, but instead of giving noncommittal answers, you actively avoid providing your abuser with information about your life.

Here's how it works:

  • You receive an award...and you say nothing to your abuser.

  • You achieve a milestone in your life or career...and you share none of it with your abuser.

  • You're going to publish your first book in two decades...and you say nothing.

It's unlikely your abusive narcissist has been asking questions about your life, because it doesn't involve or glorify them. My monster has never once asked me about my book, or my editing assignments at Dead Fox Publishing, because they don't affect her.

As a matter of fact, I don't WANT her to ask any questions, because she'll use them to downplay or denigrate my accomplishments. Remember, this is the woman who, upon reading my first Big 5-published book (a Regency romance), sighed and said, "I'd always hoped you had something more literary in you."

So for the foreseeable future, I keep her on an information diet—what she doesn't know won't hurt ME.

This includes my birthday in January, because it's a landmark: I'll be turning the big 6-0. I have no idea what I'm going to do yet, but you can be certain it won't involve my monster. Abusive narcissists manage to ruin every celebration that's not about them. For example...for one of my last birthdays (before I cut him off), my IdiotBro decided he and his wife were going to come to our house with pizza for my birthday. Without asking me what I wanted. I told him not to bother coming, which hurt his fee-fees. He never apologized. That was the beginning of the end of our relationship.

So...an information diet means you share yourself only with those you trust, like your chosen family, and say nothing to your abusers. Keep your life and your milestones a secret. Like I said previously...what they don't know won't hurt you.

I hope this helps.

Until next time,

Liz
