Choosing the right fly reel for Trout Fishing

Mar 25, 2023

Fly fishing is a popular activity enjoyed by anglers all over the world. One of the most important pieces of equipment for a fly fisherman is the reel. Choosing the right fly fishing reel for trout can make all the difference in your fishing experience. In this article, we will explore the factors to consider when selecting a fly fishing reel for trout. Many see it as a way of simply storing fly line but the use of a quality reel can also help you land bigger fish.

  1. Line Weight: The first thing to consider when selecting a fly fishing reel is the line weight that you will be using. Trout are typically caught using a 3-6 weight line. It is important to choose a reel that is compatible with the line weight you will be using. A reel that is too heavy or too light will negatively affect your casting ability. So take into consideration the rod you will be using with it. It's a myth that you should be able to balance the rod with the reel. It is much more important that it feels right to you.

  2. Drag System: The drag system is another important factor to consider when choosing a fly fishing reel for trout. A good drag system will help you control the speed at which the fish is pulling the line. This is especially important when fighting larger trout or when fishing in strong currents. Look for reels with a smooth and reliable drag system. A good drag will have a smooth inertia this prevents fish snapping off when they make a sudden run. Some folks prefer click and pawl reels which have no drag, I am not amongst them.

  3. Arbor Size: The arbor size of a reel refers to the diameter of the spool. A larger arbor size means that the spool is wider and will hold more line. This can be an advantage when fishing for larger trout or when casting in windy conditions. However, a larger arbor size can also make the reel heavier and more cumbersome to use. It is a fine balance personally I rarely see my backing line but it has happened! Don't be caught out with not having enough backing on your reel. A larger arbour also prevents fly line coiling.

  4. Material: The material of the reel is another important factor to consider. Reels are typically made from aluminum, plastic, or composite materials. Aluminum reels are the most durable and are ideal for anglers who plan to use their reel frequently. Plastic and composite reels are lighter and more affordable but may not be as durable. If you are careful with your kit then this is up to you. I fish a lot and require my tackle to be robust.

  5. Brand and Price: The brand and price of the reel should also be considered. There are many reputable brands that produce high-quality reels specifically designed for trout fishing. However, a higher price does not always equate to better quality. It is important to do your research and read reviews before making a purchase. This is true of much in the sport of Fly Fishing, budget plays a large part in selecting a reel. Like everything the choice is yours.

In conclusion, selecting the right fly fishing reel for trout is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. Consider the line weight, drag system, arbor size, material, brand, and price when making your selection. By taking these factors into account, you will be able to choose a reel that will enhance your enjoyment of the sport. The analogy I always think of is cars, I can drive to the fishing in a VW Up but I would much rather go in a nice new Jeep......lol.
