This is my first exploration of the Three Little Pigs Game Design Challenge. I welcome everyone to join in the challenge and have some fun flexing your creativity.
When I first set out to create a card game based on the classic "Three Little Pigs" story, I knew I wanted to capture the essence of the tale while creating a unique and engaging gameplay experience. Here's how the concept came to life.
The Initial Concept
My design process began with breaking down the core elements of the story:
Three pigs
Three different houses
The threatening wolf
A sense of strategic building and protection
I decided to use a standard deck of playing cards as my foundation, which would allow for easy accessibility and endless creativity for potential game designers.
Bringing the Story to Life Through Game Mechanics
The Houses
I mapped out the suits to represent the three house materials:
One suit would represent Straw
Another would represent Sticks
The final suit would represent Bricks
Player Mechanics
The primary objective was to build houses by placing cards in numerical order..
Winning Condition
The first player to successfully build three complete houses wins the game. Each completed house earns the player a token.
The Wolf's Disruptive Role
To add excitement and unpredictability, I introduced Wolf cards with special abilities:
Blow away part of a house
Block a player from building on a house for a turn
Steal a card from another player
and other interesting ideas to complicate the lives of the players trying to build their houses.
Playtesting Begins
With the basic ruleset in place, I began the crucial process of playtesting. As is pretty common, a lot of the ideas that worked well in my head didn't quite play as expected during playtest. Whenever we play our games, I keep a notebook next to me and jot down notes continuously. I'm noting my experiences during the game, questions that come up as we play, complaints of conflicts that occur, and a just about anything else that happens to pop into my head. What we quickly started testing were:
player hand sizes
actions a player could take on their turn
restrictions that needed to be added or removed to help with gameplay
adding abilities for players to trade cards
Wolf actions and the number of each action contained in the deck
and so many more variants.
