August 25th, 2026: I Grew Up Singing Country Songs

Aug 26, 2026

I grew up singing country songs.

My dad always played Linda Ronstadt

on his cassette deck player in the purple Chevy Nova.

My mom had Dolly Parton’s record album, Jolene,

on repeat every time he had an affair.

When my dad left for good,

Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” became

my mother’s divorce mantra.

I knew every single word.

I always said I would never get divorced.

I clung to a toxic marriage far too long.

If only one person in a marriage does the work,

it doesn’t get better.

Miley Cyrus's “Flowers”

became my divorce mantra on repeat.

I no longer listen to country songs

because I refuse to stand by a man

who didn't stand up for me.

I guess time made me a liar.
