Maukka at a local children's charity event, a weekend before the May Day
We played our first public gig for a potentially larger audience at the Orivesi May Day Market. The journey to the stage was a series of coincidences, and it actually all started with our pony, Maukka. Maukka is the archetype of all Shetland ponies—the best pony in the world, with whom you can do anything. That includes giving pony rides at various events. When the Orivesi May Day Market was first established a few years ago, we joined the crew specifically to offer pony rides, and this year was no different; that was our original plan for the market-goers. So, how on earth did we end up on stage? This is once again a story about my special skill: ' multipasking – a Finnish play on the word multitasking, which basically means trying to do everything at once and failing at all of it simultaneously
Already last year, while participating in the market arrangements, I mentioned in a message that we have a band that plays Värttinä-style music. I couldn't really describe us any better than that back then. I also wrote that we might have been able to perform. At the time, however, the idea of a gig at the market felt very distant. We didn't even have a name yet. But while planning this year's event, the same question came up, and this time we were more than ready to take the stage.
However, we still had the pony rides at the same market. It was obvious that doing a gig and pony rides at the same time wouldn't quite work. 'No worries,' said the old multitasker, 'it’s just a matter of organizing.' And in the end, it was. There were many twists along the way—several involving car breakdowns and the inspection and repair of the horse trailer—and neither the gig nor the pony rides would have happened without the help of good old and new friends.
On May Day morning, we packed the car with the pony’s harness, riding helmets, brushes, water buckets, the pony carriage, the pony itself, and all the other gear. In the same go, we packed a kantele, a microphone, a mic stand, a frame drum, and a sound system just in case. Then we headed to the market, where we spent three hours giving rides to children in wonderful May Day weather, while listening to Johnny Ikuinen Solo and Volume Boys. The atmosphere was electric, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. At one o’clock, we packed the pony and the carriage into the car. The pony stayed there happily munching on hay while we hauled our instruments onto the stage. Kati changed her clothes, took a quick glance in the mirror, and realized there was no time for any proper 'glamming up' for this gig—the soundcheck was waiting. The show started at 1:45 PM, and without Johnny Ikuinen’s help with the audio, the mix might have failed.
The gig itself was amazing to play, and the main thing we took away from it was a huge fire to get back on stage! Attached to this post is a mobile recording from our last rehearsal before the gig, where you can hear the setlist."
