UTM

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to set up a UTM in Google Ads:

Step 1: Identify the destination URL

Before setting up a UTM in Google Ads, you need to identify the destination URL for your ad. This is the page that people will land on when they click your ad. It could be a specific product page, a landing page, or your homepage.

Step 2: Create your UTM parameters

UTM parameters are tags that you add to your destination URL to track your ad's performance. There are five standard parameters that you can use:

  • utm_source: the source of your traffic (e.g. Google Ads)

  • utm_medium: the type of traffic (e.g. CPC)

  • utm_campaign: the name of your campaign

  • utm_term: the keyword that triggered your ad (optional)

  • utm_content: the specific ad or link that was clicked (optional)

To create your UTM parameters, use the Google Analytics Campaign URL Builder tool. Simply enter your destination URL and fill in the relevant fields for your campaign.

For example, if you're running a Google Ads campaign for a new product launch, you might use these UTM parameters:

  • utm_source=google

  • utm_medium=cpc

  • utmcampaign=newproduct_launch

Step 3: Add your UTM parameters to your destination URL

Once you've created your UTM parameters, add them to your destination URL. You can do this manually or by using a URL builder tool like Google's URL Shortener.

For example, if your destination URL is https://www.example.com/product, and you've created UTM parameters for a Google Ads campaign called "newproductlaunch," your final UTM URL would be:

https://www.example.com/product?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=new_product_launch

Step 4: Use your UTM URL in your Google Ads campaign

Finally, use your UTM URL in your Google Ads campaign. When you create your ad, simply paste in the UTM URL as the destination URL. This will ensure that your ad's performance is tracked using your UTM parameters.

Step 5: Monitor your UTM data in Google Analytics

Once your UTM is set up and your campaign is running, you can monitor your performance data in Google Analytics. Simply navigate to the "Acquisition" section and select "Campaigns" to view your UTM data.

By tracking your UTM data, you can gain valuable insights into your ad's performance, and optimize your campaigns for better results
